This Monday was food day at COP16 Colombia Biodiversity in Cali! 🍎 🌿 The Netherlands Ambassador to Colombia and food expert Reina Buijs visited the Netherlands pavilion, and we hosted engaging discussions. Our sessions on the water-biodiversity-food nexus addressed crucial questions: What would our economy look like if biodiversity were fully integrated into mainstream practice by 2040? How can we support plant genetic resources? And how can measuring biodiversity in food products and food systems drive transformative change? 💬 "Return on Inspiration (ROI) is where landscape restoration begins. However, making it happen requires at least a 20-year commitment – we must move beyond short-term projects," noted Willem Ferwerda from Commonland. 💡Not familiar with ROI? It’s the first of Commonland's four returns in landscape restoration, and reflects the belief that local communities must believe in a better future to make restoration succeed. The topic of mainstreaming biodiversity sparked lively discussions. William V. from Naturalis Biodiversity Center pointed out that implementation often fails because we're unable to make the right adjustments. "We need both vertical and horizontal integration!" 💬 "One path to mainstreaming biodiversity is to shift toward more localized food systems and cherish local diversity and species richness,” stated Stef de Haan from CGIAR 🎥 A crucial part for mainstreaming biodiversity is stortytelling. 🌍 At blisce/, we're proud to see our portfolio company, Reforest'Action, taking part in COP16 Colombia under the theme "Peace with Nature." 🌱 From October 21 to November 1, 2024, over 190 countries will gather in Cali to mobilize and accelerate action and funding for #biodiversity, with just six years remaining to meet the global targets set for 2030. Since 2010, Stéphane Hallaire and his team have been leaders in nature-based solutions (#NbS), integrating biodiversity into #climate action. Over the last few months, their work has focused on refining an #impact management framework incorporating biodiversity measurement indicators—one of their key pillars for #reporting ecosystem services. At #COP16, they will: 👉 Present The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) with Botanic Gardens Conservation International, showcasing the Nariño project in Colombia as a pilot for certification. 👉 Share insights from their ecosystemic impact approach in the Guizhou project in China as part of the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits. 👉 Contribute, as members of the Organization for Biodiversity Certificates (OBC) Framework, to its Methodology Consortium’s discussions on market approaches. Upcoming Events: Norfolk Landscapes Conference & North Sea Seaweed Conference We are excited to be presenting at the Norfolk Landscapes Conference & Exhibition, as part of our ongoing project with WWF. Our expert Schalk de Beer will be discussing "The Wonders of Seaweed as Natural Capital". Next week, Schalk will also be attending the North Sea Seaweed Conference in The Hague, The Netherlands on Thursday 3rd October, to continue exploring the role of seaweed in driving sustainability and green finance. Whilst the environmental benefits of seaweed are clear (from carbon capture to biodiversity support), there are still challenges in navigating green finance initiatives that value these services. The key question remains… How do we develop financial frameworks that recognise the true worth of natural ecosystems? Last week, I had a privilege to attend opening day of IUCN Regional Congress for Europe and Central Asia region, held in Bruges, Belgium; and to meet in person, and have interesting exchanges with many conservation leaders from the region. Main takeaways: ☝ The major themes on the agenda: sustainable growth, low-impact food systems, the climate challenge, conservation outcomes and nature restoration; ☝ Particular consideration in terms of furthering IUCN agenda is given to: the role of civic spaces, AI and digital solutions, next generation leadership, private sector engagement, innovative tools and standards, and finance for nature; ☝ IUCN and it’s partners offers diversity of ideas, knowledge tools and practices to advance global conservation agenda. That includes Act30 initiative, aimed at conserving 30% of planet’s land and water by 2030 (aligning with Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework) ☝ Many interesting presentations, group and bilateral discussions, meetings...delighted and proud to be part of community!...#IUCN #RCF24ENCA #Act30
