"Seidenbluse statt Wollsocken: Anna Alex macht Naturschutz zur Chefsache!” Today, we’re especially proud of our co-founder, Anna Alex, and thankful to Süddeutsche Zeitung and Kathrin Werner for giving Nala - and thus nature - such an important and much-needed platform by placing nature conservation in the economic section. Given that nature only receives 0.2% of all broadcast minutes on TV (according to a study by the MaLisa foundation), this coverage marks a meaningful shift in #media attention! The article traces Anna’s path from her entrepreneurial beginnings in the fashion industry to addressing the climate crisis with Planetly, and now with Nala Earth, focusing fully on protecting our planet’s natural ecosystems. We at Nala think this piece beautifully captures our perspective and vision - step by step, we’re bringing nature to the forefront of business priorities. Yesterday I spent the morning at a seminar hosted by WWF and the Naturskyddsföreningen (SSNC) (Swedish Society for Nature Conservation) where they presented a suggestion for a new legal framework for conserving nature. It is of course far from being signed into law, but it builds on two rather successful existing frameworks; one for our public finances and one for the climate. Such a framework - if it were to become a law - would force the government to come up with plans for how to conserve nature and then follow through on commitments made. Conserving nature and the rapidly dwindling biodiversity is of course all about food - the system that has taken charge of almost every single pixel of planet Earth. For us stubborn folks that claim that today's food system must change and that we must innovate on what we eat and how we produce it in order to save nature it was a field day! Thanks for running with this initiative WWF and SSNC - it is far harder to whisk you guys away than annoying midges such as us at Sweden Foodtech. I look forward to spending time on this topic at the great stage of Bite Stockholm in September next year. Then Denmark will also be chairing the EU and use that opportunity to push for some radical policy shifts (the Danes will also be invited to Bite Stockholm). 2025 looks interesting, unless you're one of those backwards-looking policymakers that we have far too many of.

🌍 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘄 ! Across the globe, irreplaceable ecosystems are being sacrificed for economic growth and profit. The beautiful #Amelisweerd forest near Utrecht is one of the latest casualties, with hundreds of trees at risk of being cut down to widen the A27 highway.—an "upgrade" that comes with a €1.7 billion price tag and countless ecological costs. 💰 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐰? Recently, Minister Barry Madlener of the PVV (far-right) dismissed a sustainable alternative plan that would have preserved Amelisweerd. Instead, he is pushing forward with the original plan, prioritizing short-term profit over ecological preservation and social well-being. 🌲 𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐭, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭? This is about more than just one forest. It’s a fight against the logic of profit over life, one devastating decision at a time. 🌿 Amelisweerd isn't just a piece of land. It’s a biodiversity haven, a space for people to breathe, connect, and find peace. If we continue to sacrifice for profit the ecosystems upon which humans depend, what kind of world are we building? 🌎 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡. Stand with Amelisweerd, stand with our planet, and let’s push back against this short-sighted logic of “growth.” It’s time to show that life and future generations matter more than numbers on a spreadsheet. 📢 #RedAmelisweerdNu #AmelisweerdNietGeasfalteerd #A27 #PlanetOverProfit #ClimateActionNow 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽: • 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁: Join us on Saturday, November 16, from 14:00 to 16:00 at Domplein in #Utrecht. The idea that loss of biodiversity and climate change is costly for our economies and therefore we need “to do smth” is the reason why we are in this situation today. Forgetting that nature has intrinsic value not tied to our pockets is the biggest mistake we can make as humanity. The only we can trully protect this planet is by a massive cultural shift and accepting that the planet does not need us but its our duty to protect it.

Sverige behöver en samlad politik för vår natur. Det skriver vi idag på GP Debatt tillsammans med WWF och ett 50 tal ledande forskare

Today is International Day for Biodiversity! Biodiversity is a broad concept, often difficult to grasp. Nonetheless, our research on biodiverse consumption shows that people value biodiversity and wish to protect it. But what is the best way to do this, and what influence does one consumer have in a system that seems to be ruled by profitability? These questions arise when people are asked what they can do to contribute to biodiversity. For answers, they often look to governments and policymakers. Policymakers can provide vision, a framework for action, and sometimes even necessary constraints to ensure that biodiversity is protected for future generations to be able to appreciate its inherent value as well. In the run-up to the European elections, join the #EuropeforNature call to urge Europeans to prioritise nature and biodiversity in decision-making processes – on an individual level, but more importantly, on a system level as well. https://lnkd.in/e5BuZGDq

Today, we celebrate the United Nations’ International Day for Biological Diversity – an event that promotes the importance of maintaining nature’s balance to support all life on earth 🌍. The theme of 2024 is ‘Be part of the plan’ – an invitation for companies and individuals to do their bit to protect the world’s biological health. As a business with biodiversity at its core, Sappi is committed to protecting working forests while supporting the ecosystems that sustain a nature-positive planet ♻. As individuals, our colleagues have their part to play too. Sappi teams are working on projects and initiatives that deepen our appreciation of biodiversity. Most recently, colleagues at Sappi’s Kirkniemi Mill in Finland organised a bird watching trip guided by local ornithological society Hakki. Kirkniemi’s lake is home to many species of birds, including egrets, grey herons, terns, brown marsh hawks and sea magpies. In total, the team identified around 34 species of birds, and in the spirit of today’s event, the initiative has enriched their experience and knowledge of the area’s native wildlife 🦅. 👉 Download our 2023 Sappi Group Sustainability Report to learn about how we’re working to support a thriving world for generations to come through a bio-based, circular economy. https://bit.ly/3UKeYf3 #Biodiversity #BePartOfThePlan

ARTE film about peat extraction in Germany (in German) Peat in potting soils is the substrate with the highest greenhouse gas emissions from all materials. For this reason, no new licenses are issued in Niedersachsen in northern Germany. For the hobby gardener, the transition is simple: avoid peat-based potting soil and plants grown in peat-containing substrates—there are plentiful alternatives. For the professional market, companies like Gramoflor GmbH & Co. KG (portrayed in the film) show their efforts to rewet the extracted areas to reduce the damage. 🌿🌍Revisiting an insightful piece from 2018. In "Biodiversity challenge - A Luxembourgish perspective" by Philip L.G. Birget, PhD we are reminded of the pressing issue of biodiversity decline. Birget's discussion on biodiversity loss, framed by the alarming decrease in insect populations, sheds light on the environmental challenges that persist in Luxembourg and beyond. As urbanization and intensive agriculture continue to threaten our natural habitats, this article's message resonates strongly amidst current environmental concerns. Luxembourg's rapid development, while notable, brings to the fore the critical balance between economic growth and ecological preservation. The need for sustainable practices is more pronounced as we face global biodiversity crises. Birget's call to value and protect our natural heritage is a powerful reminder of our responsibility towards the environment. 🌱 👉️ Read more: tinyurl.com/2v2c89pj 👀 © Philip Birget

‘Rethinking sustainability of marine fisheries for a fast-changing planet’, provides 11 golden rules that redefine the concept of sustainability. To truly achieve a brighter future for the ocean and communities, these rules are guided by two principles that would revolutionize the way that this ocean exploitated. 1) Fishing must minimize impacts on marine species and habitats, adapt to climate change, and enable the regeneration of depleted marine life and habitats; 2) fishing must support and enhance the health, well-being, and resilience of people and communities - in particular, the most vulnerable among us - and not simply benefit corporations that tightly steer profits to owners and shareholders while leaving others to bear the costs. https://lnkd.in/grTXY8Bb
Our team of co-authors worked for years to devise and reach consensus on 11 Golden Rules for truly social-ecological fisheries. How can cities be transformed to restore biodiversity and improve human well-being through Nature-based solutions (NbS)? 🏙 🌳 The transformative change of cities are vital to our natural environment. This is why the biodiverse cities project has set out to implement Nature-based solutions across several cities in the north sea region with several important purposes. · Halt biodiversity loss · Build resilience toward climate change · Support ecosystem services · Promote nature inclusive cities and societies Nature-based solutions provide important Ecosystem-services with important effects for both people and nature, including Flood & drought control, Water purification, Heat stress mitigation and Nutrient cycling 🌍 . Therefore, NbS can provide several critical benefits for our nature, for our wellbeing and for our ability to withstand climate change. We are very excited about this project and expect it to not only enhance biodiversity in existing cities, but also provide valuable insights into integrating nature-based solutions into future urban planning🌱 🐞 🏘 .
