A mining engineer friend of mine was looking for a change after five years in the same company. He saw a job with a big mining company in Ghana and applied for it through their website. Weeks later he was called for an interview. In his estimation, he did interview very well. He went back to wait for a positive feedback. A few weeks later the feedback came, but it was not positive. “Even though you interviewed very well, we’ve found a stronger candidate”, the email read in part. It wasn’t the feedback he expected but there wasn’t much he could do about it so he moved on. About six months after this the company advertised for another engineering role, but higher. My friend was in two minds. He thought about it and he came to one conclusion; “I lose nothing if I apply”. He applied and reached out to the recruiter that he was still interested in working for the company. He was called for a “conversation” with people who were not part of the previous interview. He was offered the job. A higher role than the previous one and yes, the compensation was better too. He has been having a great time in the role since he started in 2020. The role he nearly didn’t apply for. Sometimes a no means “just hold on a little bit, something better is coming your way” When you have put in the work and genuinely done your best, may what truly belongs to you come to you in high measure. Mining creates 2 000 more jobs Total direct employment in the mining industry in Namibia rose by 12.6% last year to 18 189, up from 16 147 the year before. The surge was linked to new job openings from the reactivation of the Langer Heinrich mine and the expansion of other operations, the Chamber of Mines Namibia says in its latest Annual Report. Direct employment comprised 8 950 permanent employees, 803 temporary employees, and 8 436 contractors. Each industry job contributes significantly to government revenue through personal income tax (PAYE) and value-added tax (VAT), the Chamber says. Last year, mining company employees paid N$1.493 billion in PAYE. The majority of those employed in the mining sector are Namibians, constituting about 97% of the workforce in 2023.

We placed an advert for heavy mining equipment mechanics. This was in 2010, I think. We did a shortlist and had a lot of impressive CVs and a few average ones. Interviews were scheduled. We grouped the candidates into batches, and interviewed them a batch per day due to the numbers. On one of the days the batch had brilliant CVs with impressive certificates and experiences. One after the other they came in. Impressive CVs didn’t translate into impressive performances. They fumbled and their answers were all over the place. At the end of that day, we hired only one person. Here is what may surprise you. The person we hired had only basic education certificate and had no prior mining experience. He was trained in “Kumasi Magazine”, an artisanal hub in Ghana. He barely spoke English. But he was impressive. He understood how things worked. He exhibited a refreshing attitude. On paper, he nearly did not make the cut. But in reality, he was the only one who got hired. See, on paper there were better soldiers to fight Goliath, but he was killed by David the shepherd. Whatever you are doing now, herding sheep, sweeping the streets or learning a trade by the road side; Do it with every strength in you. This is my first photo with PT. Tempopress International Delivery. Switching job sectors is not an easy decision. I have to face the fact that mining is very different from retail (my previous job sector). The challenge is how to quickly adjust and understand the flow of the mining process in order to be able to become an HR Development person who can make a good contribution to the company.
