Myth buster! An in-house legal job may not be as cushy as it appears from the vantage point of Biglaw lawyers. “General counsel said the top contributors to turnover were a high volume of work, repetitive and unengaging tasks, poor work/life balance, insufficient tech resources and lack of opportunities for professional development.” And, there’s more bad news for in-house lawyers. Legal is on the Rise! Bill rates, in-house budgets, and signing bonuses are all trending upward. The legal market is hotter than ever—are you keeping up? + Law firm bill rates: YTD bill rates have increased by 8.4% for AmLaw 100 firms, 5.9% for AmLaw 200 firms, and 5.6% for midsize firms + In-house department budgets: 61% of General Counsels expect their legal department budgets to increase by an average of 5% in 2025 + In-house signing bonuses: Large public companies are increasingly offering substantial signing bonuses in addition to attractive pay packages. The focus is shifting toward external hires over internal promotions, and these bonuses are driven by intense competition for top talent. #LegalIndustry #LawFirmTrends #InHouseCounsel #LegalBudgeting #HiringTrends #LegalRecruitment #AmLaw #LegalMarket #TopTalent #LawyerLife

Lawyers have a bad reputation IMO for the following reasons: 1. How we charge clients. The billable hour model sucks. It leaves clients guessing how much they’re going to pay and since it is used for law firms to track productivity, it can leave a lawyer and client’s interests in conflict. 2. Poor (timing on) communication. Although the expectation for an immediate response has increased with emails and text messages, lawyers still simply do not get back to their clients on time and enough. 3. Poor management of expectations. Lots of lawyers oversell clients and underdeliver. They also don’t properly communicate what to expect along the way. I’ve made a conscious effort to address these issues with my practice at The Workplace Law Firm, but I know that we can still do better as a profession. What would you add or take away from the list? #attorney #lawyers #lawfirm #TheWorkplaceLawfirm

I spent 10 years in-house before opening my law firm. This is why: In-house is equal parts business and law. And some days (or weeks), the scales tilt towards everything but the law. The smorgasbord of responsibilities may include defining procurement policies, helping establish new revenue streams, and streamlining operations. This work may not be considered “legal” in the traditional sense. But working with leadership in all functions of the business is how you learn what’s important. There’s a perception. A misperception, really. That lawyers need to act like lawyers. Verbose. Rigid. Non-communicative. As any in-house attorney will attest, the role changes how you approach people and matters. And once you have this foundation, the practice of law makes much more sense. #law #attorney #inhousecounsel

I have been In-House my entire career, preceded by my role as the Controller of a publicly-traded company. Being an effective In-house counsel means more than just knowing the law or being in call to review a contract- it’s about being deeply integrated into the organization’s daily operations. When we are part of the day-to-day, we gain a real understanding of the challenges, nuances, and opportunities our teams face, allowing us to proactively support and drive strategic goals. Without operational involvement, we risk becoming reactive rather than impactful, spending our time putting our fires instead of helping to prevent them. To truly add value, in-house counsel needs to be a trusted, hands-on advisor who’s as invested in the company’s growth as any other team member. #InHouseCounsel #Legal #CorporateLaw #StrategicCounsel
