Exciting News from IISc Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed a promising solution to the growing problem of microplastic pollution in water. Their innovation – a sustainable hydrogel that can remove over 90% of microplastics during testing. Microplastics, tiny plastic fragments, pose a significant threat to human health and the environment. They can enter our bodies through drinking water and even harm aquatic and terrestrial life. Existing methods, like filtration membranes, get clogged by these small particles. The IISc team, led by Professor Suryasarathi Bose, addressed this challenge with a unique 3D hydrogel. This hydrogel boasts an intertwined network of three polymers (chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyaniline) that trap microplastics. Additionally, nanoclusters infused within the hydrogel act as catalysts, breaking down the trapped microplastics when exposed to UV light. This innovative design offers a sustainable and efficient approach to microplastic removal. The Better India.
