Connection & Thanksgiving! There are so many things to be grateful for in our lives that we don’t think about it because they are either not big enough according to our expectations or we don’t pay attention to them because we take it for granted. This week I’m giving thanks for a number of things: being healthy, my family that I love (my dog Bella included), my friends, my job, my co-workers. I give thanks for having found a second home in United States for 16 years and for the past 5 in Minnesota, a state that I came to love for the great people and its beautiful places (outside the Winter). I’m in Japan this week with my heart full of gratitute for the things I just mentioned and to celebrate my birthday. Hopefully I’m becoming wiser as I grow older. While I was sharing some of my adventures in Japan on Facebook and Instagram I got a comment from a beautiful person that I met through work looong time ago that got to my heart. She and I met when I was a completely different person. At that time I had no idea how much emotionally unprepared and broken I was. I didn’t want to be seen and at the same time I was internally screaming to be seen and heard and I didn’t even know it. It wasn’t so much about the comment she maid but the fact that she saw me when nobody would. People only saw the professional me. Fastforward, after having met so many people from different Countries and cultures through work. Having learned so much through pain and gain (it is all a matter of perspective), I learned the importance of seeing people beyond what they show me. We all are in this world to be part of each others learnings, wheather we like it or not. By seeing people beyond a title or a possession helps to create a true connection. True connections help us to stand strong. So I also want to give thanks to my true connections. Each one of those who, at some point, walked on my path and were part of my jouney and left a mark without even knowing. How do respond to the question, "how are you doing?" Is it with excitement and enthusiasm? Or is it with dejection and sarcasm? You've heard, "living the dream." Dripping with causticity. What a sad response. But when someone responds with happiness, it is contagious. "I'm fantastic!" with a smile, and sincerity, will lift others up. So how do we get to a place where the answer is a genuine one thrilling gratitude? I believe it is to find something for which to be grateful. Hold on to that. And when someone asks, think of that thing (or things) and respond happily. Not every day is going to be perfect. But there is a lot to be happy about, there are many reasons to live life gratefully and abundantly. The more we do it, the easier it becomes. The ancillary benefit is that people prefer to talk and hang out with someone who is happy and grateful, rather than someone who is sarcastic and downtrodden. Ce-ler-bra-tion Time! I attended a wonderful wedding last Friday and was reminded of how impritnat it is to celebrate the good things in life! The bride was Columbian, the groom American, so we had an amazing celebration of different countries, cultures, wedding rituals and music! A few people asked me about the food! And as the wedding was in London, the food was modern European, so not so different there, and still excellent! It was a celebration of entering a new phase in life, transitioning from leading a single life to a married life. Celebrating with lots of family and friends. On the work front, last week I was co-leading a group of 24 senior leaders and MD’s in the banking industry. We were exploring what they need to succeed in the current complex world. As part of the process we had them looking back at the best of their past careers and tapping into a time - a high point where everything was going as they wanted it to be and they were at their best, their best selves work wise! And in doing this, they talked about how it also brought back the feelings and the energy that went along with that time. They could really embody their best selves again. And many of them commented on how important it is to stop and reflect and celebrate their successes from the past. Then you can build on these for the future. In fact research now shows, that if you can easily bring to mind past successes, times when you were at your best and step into this you, embody it again, you are then in a much stronger position from which to tackle the current challenges you face. You can tap into all the resources you have, but may have forgotten about. Back to the wedding! At the afterparty, which went on till midnight, at around 9 to 10pm, when the energy may be slowing down a little bit for some, out came the party hats and glasses which injected new energy and excitement and got people dancing around renewed! And I wonder, what extra resources can you call on to keep you going on the final stretch? What else do you have in your kit bag to keep the energy flowing and help you make the finish line?
