Youth, in the world of wine, is a sharp double-edge sword. Older people in general, especially men, are often simply assumed to be more knowledgeable about wines. When I first had a conversation in person with Sean Ou DipWSET, IWA, CSW, CSS, FWS, IWS, CS about my interest to teach at The Beverage Clique, he asked me why I was keen to teach. “I want to work with the younger generation and get them more interested in wines,” was my reply to him. I was referring to my little sister and the Gen Z wine drinkers, who are seemingly disinterested in wines. Fast forward a few months, my little sister did sign up for a WSET Level 2 in Wine class that I also taught. In these few months of teaching, my proudest teaching moment was when she told me that she: (voluntarily) went to NTUC FairPrice supermarket to browse the wine selection, knows that that Malbec is common and white Malbec not so, and that Haut-Médoc is generally Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot dominant. Ok she forgot about what Amarone is so we still have work to do. I do not subscribe to the belief that Gen Z have no interest in wines; but they do care about their health and couldn't care less for the wine snobbery. That's a discussion for another day. Play to your strengths instead of focusing on what you lack in all situations. #wineeducation #wset #wineteaching #wine

5 Tips to Ace the WSET 3 Tasting Exams👇 Are you preparing for the WSET Level 3 exam? We bring you some WSET Level 3 Tasting Tips (WSET Level 3 Award in Wines: https://lnkd.in/gbxisQq5) 1️⃣ Systematic Approach: always use the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT). This includes assessing appearance, nose, palate, and conclusion. Practice this method regularly to develop consistency in your tasting notes. 2️⃣ Remember WSET Level 3 Wine-Lexicon: Familiarize yourself with the WSET Level 3 Wine-Lexicon. This resource provides a standardized set of terms and descriptors used in the exam. 3️⃣ Practice with the Study Group: During your WSET 3 course, follow your instructor and share your tasting notes with your classmates. Compare observations, and provide constructive feedback to each other. 4️⃣ Review Past Tasting Notes: Regularly review and reflect on your past tasting notes. Look for patterns and areas where you can improve. This will help reinforce your learning and build your tasting memory. 5️⃣ Stay Calm and Confident: During the exam, remain calm and confident. Trust in your training and rely on a systematic approach. Don’t let nerves interfere with your ability to analyze and describe the wines. Not many people outside of the wine world will know this….🍷 For wine qualifications Wine & Spirit Education Trust do Levels 1 to 4. These are globally recognised as the best wine qualifications out there! Level 1 is basic knowledge, level 2 a touch harder. Level 3 is a big jump and then there is the BEAST! Level 4 = the Beast. It is a Diploma in wine taking most people around 2 years to do just the level 4 (and I’ve been doing the previous levels for the last 7-8 years!!) 6 modules - the hardest being D3 - which is Wines of the World. 2 written timed papers on potentially any area of the wine world that is in a 900+ page textbook. Plus 12 blind tastings too! D3 has a pass rate of barely 50%! TODAY - I got the below! 👇 Baring my dissertation module coming back badly, I should be soon enough : Andrew Lofthouse DipWSET To put this in context, for actual qualifications there are approximately only 413 Masters of Wine in the world - which is the only qualification above this one!! How excited am I on this Friday ? INCREDIBLY 🍷🍷🍷 #wset #winequalifications #winediploma #graduation #wineeducation #wineforall

I received a WSET Alumni email earlier today saying that 2024 saw a record number of Wine Diploma graduates. Great news if you ask me. However, there has been a lot of discussion here on LinkedIn lately regarding whether or not the wine business needs more WSET or otherwise wine-educated people. The point emphasized is that there is no lack of wine knowledge in the industry and that what the industry needs is not more educators, but more consumer understanding, more marketing and communication skills. I wholeheartedly agree that it's high time the wine business started taking marketing seriously and even prioritizing it at the same level as the product quality and state-of-the-artedness of the equipment. However, it does not seem right to oppose one over the other. People who come to WSET typically do not do it the first day after leaving secondary school with the idea of becoming wine educators. More often than not you see at any WSET (or other) course people who are professionals already in sales, marketing, and/or management. They come for more knowledge and a personal challenge. In any case, it cannot possibly hurt the industry to have its professionals educated about the subject of the industry. Why has the winery industry transformed into a snobbish industry? I discussed this with a friend recently, reflecting on how much we've both changed since entering the wine industry and how we conduct ourselves now. It seems the transformation wasn't unique to us; many others have changed similarly. We both acknowledged our past snobbishness, rigidly adhering to what we had learned and believed. We thought everyone drinking wine should follow these rules. My friend, coming from an education background, and I realized that many wine professionals, when starting out, tend to be snobbish, likely due to the many rules the wine industry teaches us to follow. This made me realize that our education system often prepares us to replicate knowledge rather than encourage innovation and problem-solving. How many of you have completed a wine course with dreams of teaching or simply replicating what you've learned? I've lost count of the professionals I know who want to open a wine school or a similar type of business involving educational masterclass events or becoming WSET educators. Some important questions arise: ✅Must everyone be formally educated before enjoying wine? ✅Do all customers want to learn how to taste or drink like wine professionals? I believe there's a niche for this, but it doesn't cater to everyone. Perhaps we're overlooking a significant opportunity because we're not listening to their needs and are too focused on our own bubble. David Stevens-Castro a.k.a DSC, once remarked to me that while our industry boasts many educators, perhaps it's time to incorporate more entertainment-oriented perspectives. Personally, I feel there's a lack of practical application in what I've studied. Less emphasis on rote memorization and more on problem-solving skills could be advantageous. What are your thoughts? #rethinkingthewineindustry #winebusiness #wineindustry #wine #wineeducation
