GIS at wine-tasting 🍷🌍 Recently, I had a lot of fun composing an exercise for my students. The imaginary case was a business willing to invest into Thailand wineyards. (Inspired by Wirapohn Buncharoen (Annie)) Our Geospatial Exploration Involved: Climate Analysis: We had to analyze which regions are better for grape cultivation considering temperature, humidity and sunniness. Than we had to check the results against the actual map on https://lnkd.in/eyZ9xcBC. Vineyard Verification: As we wanted this also to be a training on image interpretation we had to distinguish vineyards from other plants (rice, coconut, mango trees). Historical Insights: We went to Google Earth's historical imagery to uncover the rise and fall of vineyards. For example it resulted that only 2 of 7 wineries have enough actual grape fields to be actually considered for investing. This exercise waa not only geospatial analysis but also about how important is to explore the field your're analysing, how to check your insights against several sources and just fun because it was about things easy to understand and touch. Researchers from University of Haifa’s School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures have uncovered vital insights to help modern winemakers enhance resilience against climate change. Following a decade-long study in the Negev desert in Southern Israel, Dr. Joshua Schmidt and Prof. Guy Bar-Oz have detailed the potential of ancient grape cultivars and traditional farming techniques to adapt to the increasing environmental challenges that have put the modern wine industry under imminent threat. “Our findings suggest that reviving and incorporating historical cultivars, along with the agronomic practices that supported their growth, can significantly enhance the resilience of vineyards in the face of climate change,” said Dr. Schmidt. 🔗 Dive into the details in The Jerusalem Post #ASUH #UniversityofHaifa #ClimateChange #Winemaking #ClimateResiliance
