During Ramadan, individuals may experience a reduction in nicotine and caffeine intake, disruptions in sleep patterns, and frequent morning hypoglycemia due to nighttime sugar consumption. These factors can significantly impact mood and productivity among employees. However, ensuring a healthy and safe work environment during Ramadan is not only possible but essential. The collaboration of occupational health professionals such as occupational physicians, occupational nurses, and safety officers becomes paramount in maintaining workplace continuity while safeguarding employee well-being. Adhering to the principles of Health and Safety at Work (4P), proactive measures are taken to prevent accidents and occupational illnesses, predict potential risks, and anticipate individual needs, including those of fasting Muslim employees. Through personalized and participatory approaches, employees actively engage in maintaining their health and safety while fulfilling their professional duties during Ramadan. On February 27, 2024, I had the honor of hosting a live television episode on Al-Sharqiya channel, where we delved into the significance of following a healthy meal pattern during Ramadan. During the episode, we emphasized the significance of seeking medical advice from healthcare professionals before fasting. With time, understanding how to manage fasting during Ramadan safely and effectively for diabetes patients has become paramount. We discussed the importance of balanced nutrition of Suhoor and Iftar meals for individuals observing fasting, particularly those with diabetes. Incorporating a variety of food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, is essential for maintaining stable blood sugar levels and overall well-being during fasting hours. Fish is the cheapest and healthy protein source: Protein can be found in red meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. in addition, protein can be found in plants such as nuts, soy, and legumes (peas, beans and lentils). The recommended amount of protein for an adult intake per day is 0.75g per kilogram of body weight. This is around 56g per day for men and 45g per day for women. Protein plays an important functions in our cells to grow and repair themselves, and for healthy development of muscles and bones. Protein also helps boost immunity and works with the carbohydrates in our diet to maintain steady blood sugar levels and a continuous supply of energy to the body. When we eat protein, from any source it breaks down by gut enzymes (proteases) into amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins, these amino acids are circulated in blood to reach body cells where these amino acids re-assembled to types of proteins the body needs at that specific time. There are 20 different amino acids needed in the body, and 9 of these amino acids are essential amino acids. These essential amino acids only found in red meat, fish, poultry eggs, and dairy products .This showing the needs for these types of protein sources . Fish is the good source of cheap proteins combined with the presence of health omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids ,plus vitamins suggests that eating seafood is a better overall choice in comparison to red meat consumption. Red meat is a rich source of protein, but also very high in not healthy saturated fats. Omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-6 fatty acids plays a crucial role in brain function, and the normal body growth and development. Both omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-6 fatty acids are a type of healthy polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). Omega-6 fatty acid helps stimulate skin and hair growth, plus maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system. Egypt due to its location between two seas, and one of the top countries in Aqua- culture technology and production ( fish farming) . fish protein should be the main protein source in Egyptian diet in replacement to the expensive and not healthy red meat. Red meat expensive is due to importing most of red meats and animal feeds from overseas..

Salads, and vegetables in general, have always been a stable in Egyptian cuisine. This was not a strike of luck but rather an engineered and balance diet, blessed by a fertile land worthy of the civilization that discovered agriculture. Over centuries, with the changing economy, Egyptian cuisines shifted. Often, vegetables were the main source of nutrients. Even cuisines, usually served with meat, were served without. And in rare times, meat emerged either as a delicacy or when the economy improved. However, now, vegetables servings have shrunk or disappeared from the homes of many Egyptians altogether. The popular free salad dish on the foul cart is now made to order. Once again, this was not a strike of luck, or rather the bad sort of it. While gradually, several and intertwined factors raised the prices of vegetables over the past decade. Some of them were radical factors resulting from structural agricultural decisions and policies that pushed prices up slowly. The secret ingredients now is a mixture of circumstantial and breaking factors, encouraged or even guided by the government, that fanned the fire beneath the price meatless stew. This phrase along with "Ramadan Mubarak" is a phrase used as a salutation when interacting with people during this time of Ramadan. ☪ Muslims around the world observe a period of fasting and spiritual reflection. From dawn until sunset, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs. This practice serves as a way to purify the soul, practice self-discipline, and empathize with those who are less fortunate. In the workplace, it is important to be respectful and understanding towards colleagues observing Ramadan. Here are some considerations to ensure an inclusive environment: 📅 - Be mindful of lunch meetings or team outings during fasting hours. Reschedule or plan them outside of those times. 🕧 - Offer flexible working hours, if possible, to accommodate the needs of those fasting. This can include adjusting start and end times or allowing breaks for prayer. 😴- Be supportive and understanding of colleagues who may be tired or less energetic due to fasting. In terms of dietary restrictions and considerations during Ramadan, here are some key points: - Muslims only eat two main meals during Ramadan: Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (meal to break the fast at sunset). - Suhoor should be a wholesome and balanced meal to provide sustained energy throughout the day. It typically includes grains, proteins, fruits, and fluids. - During Iftar, Muslims traditionally break their fast with dates, followed by a light snack or appetizer before the main meal. It is important to provide options that cater to various dietary preferences and restrictions. - Avoid scheduling work-related gatherings or team meals during Iftar time, as Muslims will be breaking their fast and need time for prayer and reflection. - Be considerate of colleagues by refraining from eating in front of them, especially during fasting hours. By considering these guidelines, we can create a respectful and inclusive workplace that supports your Muslim colleagues during the holy month of Ramadan.
