This is my presentation about the damages that hydraulically deficient #culverts can induce on #railway track superstructures and substructures. Lack of consensus on a unified design philosophy for culverts and ignorance for certain design aspects, sow the seeds for culvert failures and related consequences. The effects of turbulent and sedimented nature of surface flows towards the culverts, magnified with losses of flow area due to sedimentation within the culvert, generation of rogue, multi directional flows towards the culverts, unaccounted diverted flows especially in agricultural areas are some of the disastrous reasons that can incapacitate culverts. I discussed more in my presentation. Culverts are numerous along any transportation route. They are not as explicitly defined and monitored, and quite frankly, do not appear as interesting as bridges and tunnels either. But, they cannot be ignored and the way they have themselves remembered are damaging at the minimum and deadly at the most. #designphilosophy #culverts

Forepoling technique can be used in tunnel refurbishment and enlargement, particularly for stabilising the tunnel crown. It involves driving closely spaced poles ahead of the excavation to form a protective canopy, reducing the risk of collapse. After the installation of spiles, grouting can be done later to further strengthen the structure, ensuring safe enlargement of the tunnel while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding ground.
