How Fast Can Avian Influenza Spread in Live Bird Markets? New Research Highlights: The study shows most poultry in Asian live bird markets get infected with avian influenza within 24 hours. Key Findings: - Over 90% of chickens exposed to H9N2 subtype become infected within a day. - Birds typically become contagious in less than 5.5 hours. - 1 in 10 birds arriving at markets already exposed to H9N2. Significance: - Findings help evaluate control measures for reducing H9N2 in markets. - H9N2 is a low pathogenic zoonotic virus, causing mild disease but can lead to production losses and potentially contribute to new influenza variants. Current Interventions: - Banning overnight bird storage. - Enforcing market ‘rest days.’ - Separating bird species in markets. Expert Insight: - Dr. Guillaume Fournié emphasizes the need for multipronged interventions, including targeting chicken farmers and transporters, to reduce viral burden in markets. - Calls for vaccination strategies for all poultry destined for live bird markets. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 In our recent expert session with poultry specialist Professor 𝗦𝗷𝗮𝗮𝗸 𝗱𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘁, he discussed the latest developments in both low and high pathogenic avian influenza. 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 is a major concern for poultry farmers and, increasingly, for public health. Recent infections in dairy cattle in the United States have added to these concerns. During the webinar, Sjaak provided an update on the latest developments in the field. Bird Flu Jumps Another Hurdle 🦠🐄- A new report published today in the journal Nature (link: https://lnkd.in/gp7rwxZ6 ) reveals a concerning development regarding the deadly H5N1 virus. The in-depth study on dairy cows shows "multidirectional interspecies transmissions" between dairy cows and other nearby mammals, such as domesticated cats and raccoons. This sustained, efficient mammal-to-mammal transmission has not been observed before for this virus (clade 2.3.4.4b), indicating a potential for the virus to adapt to human-to-human transmission. Additionally, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment today (7/25/24) reported three more confirmed cases of avian flu in humans at a second farm in Weld County (link: https://lnkd.in/gn9Si9b6 ). "Colorado's total number of confirmed avian flu cases in humans now stands at 10 — nine cases at two poultry farms and one case from a dairy farm." The virus gets around and we're not paying much attention. 🆘 #PublicHealth #BirdFlu #H5N1 #InterspeciesTransmission #HealthAlert #AvianFlu #VirusResearch #Colorado

Check out this post and interview from the One Health Trust about the globally-spreading highly pathogenic avian influenza. It's well worth 15 minutes of your time to learn why this matters! A few key concepts I picked up on in here: The number of global HPAI viral infections and exposures in birds and marine mammals is massive (lots of virus, globally-spreading). H5N1 strain is persistent (not going away seasonally). Reassortment!!! To appropriately address this growing threat, we all need to go beyond reactive, commercial-trade protecting measures. We need to do more to proactively protect animal and human health. Complacency is costly. #onehealth #conservation #avianinfluenza #community #antiepidemics
Although avian influenza only rarely infects people, when it does, it kills half or more of them. Interactions between wild and domestic birds in shared environments like wetlands and live bird markets play a crucial role in the transmission of avian influenza viruses, highlighting the significance of One Health. Wild birds, acting as natural reservoirs, carry viruses asymptomatically, posing a risk when transmitted to domestic poultry. Environmental contamination, through bird feces, contributes to indirect transmission. Monitoring these interactions is vital for effective surveillance and control strategies, emphasizing the importance of understanding and managing this interconnected health concern for both animals and humans. Listen to Dr. Vijaykrishna Dhanasekaran, head of the pathogen evolution lab and an associate professor at the School of Public Health, The University of Hong Kong, discuss the threat of bird flu. 📌 Global avian influenza report highlights for 22 June - 12 July 2024 : - 11 outbreaks in poultry and 14 in non-poultry birds and mammals across 6 countries. - About 438,000 poultry birds died or were culled, mostly in Oceania and the Americas. - The number of new outbreaks notified in birds worldwide is currently relatively low, which is consistent with the known seasonality of the disease in poultry. We continue to pay close attention to the situation of avian influenza in dairy cows in the USA and disseminate information via WAHIS. Read the complete report: https://lnkd.in/gyxkP_fp

The recent spillover of avian influenza to cattle, and then to a dairy farm worker in Texas is all over the media. Bird flu is terrifying. Although avian influenza only rarely infects people, when it does, it kills half or more of them. For the past 25 years, the number one avian influenza threat has been highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. Like other influenza A viruses, it gets its name from the two important components of the virus – the hemagglutinin, or H designation, and the neuraminidase, or N. Less important than the name is what the virus has been doing. Tens of millions of birds around the world have been infected, from poultry to wild migrating birds, and H5N1 is making friends with other viruses. These virus “friendships” help the germs evolve. And the new versions of H5N1 are popping up in unexpected places. It was recently detected in Antarctica. It’s also infecting new animals, including sea lions, foxes, and otters. Dr. Vijay Dhanasekaran, Associate Professor at HKUMed – The University of Hong Kong and head of the university’s Pathogen Evolution Lab, has been studying the startling changes in H5N1. In this episode of One World, One Health, he chats with host Maggie F. about his team’s recent findings and what they mean for global efforts to control H5N1 bird flu.
