The need is increasing. More people need our help. Nonprofiteers are at a full out sprint and trying to keep up with less $$, resources, volunteers and more. How do we prevent the overwhelm from taking over?? How do we continue to keep positive and uplifted in the work? Hiver Simon Kiranda was so open in talking about the challenges of the work as an African founder - but from our conversations internationally so many of these nonprofit challenges are in EVERY country right now. More people needing support, programs, guidance. Social impact work is propping up global society at large - and we need to figure out how to support our changemakers to keep on running up that hill and meeting the challenge head on. How do you find support in your nonprofit work?? ______________________________________________________________ Simon is the founder of Akamwenhu Initiative Uganda - a foundation that is on a mission to improve the lives of disadvantaged, vulnerable children and young people in Ugandan communities. Simon has one of the most beautiful founder stories we have ever heard; from being a child growing up on the street himself he worked his way through university and has dedicated his life to supporting rural moms and their children - so that there is not a young boy like himself in that position again. The focus is on sustainable support and skills training in Akamwenhu's mission; they have gone from supporting a small group of mom's to creating over a hundred groups of 20-35 women who create community and support each other to succeed. #WorldNGODay I forayed into #childrights by joining a grassroots NGO in 2021. Reflecting on some key #learnings from working in and partnering with NGOs over the years: 1. NGOs operate to bridge the existing societal gaps left by the #socialjusticesystem and the #criminaljusticesystem. NGOs often serve as a catalyst to converge the resources and capabilities of both these sectors to boost #systemcapacity and facilitate efficient delivery of services. 2. #socialsector professionals are more than 'NGO type' or 'activists'. :) Some of us joined #nonprofits because we truly believe in and are passionate about one or more causes and are committed to working towards them. 3. Passion towards a cause makes a world of difference in how an organization and its team approaches a task in hand and the extra mile they go to fulfill their commitment. Unfortunately, passion alone is not enough. Funding is the fuel that drives the non profit vehicle of passion. 4. The lessons on ground realities learned from working with the most vulnerable stakeholders in #childprotection #education #youthintervention and #communitydevelopment under unspeakable challenges have been the most invaluable assets in shaping my professional experience and humbling me as an individual. “Corporate social responsibility (CSR) or corporate social impact is a form of international private business self-regulation which aims to contribute to societal goals of a philanthropic, activist, or charitable nature by engaging in, with, or supporting professional service volunteering through pro bono programs, community development, administering monetary grants to non-profit organizations for the public benefit, or to conduct ethically oriented business and investment practices.” During the Women in Industry (WIN) Networking meeting convened by the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), I had the privilege to leverage how women entrepreneurs and investors can use their Corporate Social Responsibility portfolios to promote girls education in the country. This feeds into #AfricaEducatesHerCampaign by the African Union Center for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa; which calls for among other things, the creation of sustainable platforms that actively ensure access to education, retention within education, and alternative education initiatives that curb gaps in information and participation among others. The potential to promote girls education is limitless & I look forward to continued networks especially within business and industry to further this cause. Despite their profound community impact, these NGOs struggle due to a trust deficit and limited networking. The Path Forward: Field Visits: CSRs should engage with grassroots NGOs on the ground to build trust. Collaboration with Umbrella Organizations: Collaborate with networks like the Noble Citizen Foundation for vetted NGO partnerships.
