Interesting event. It is commendable that reform is prioritized alongside the restoration of public trust and the transformation of policing culture. Strong leadership integrity is crucial for improving the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Addressing current challenges requires innovative approaches to crime prevention, particularly through community engagement and technology. These efforts should consistently focus on community participation, accountability, and transparency. By fostering collaboration and adapting to the evolving needs of society, the police can position themselves as trustworthy partners in maintaining public safety. The future of policing will hinge on these three foundational pillars: integrity, innovation, and collective responsibility. Boosting the number of police officers in line with the police-to-public ratio is essential to alleviate fatigue and reduce the pressure on current officers. Other pressing concerns include addressing knife and hate crimes, as well as fostering healthy relationships among individuals from various communities and ethnicities.

I had the opportunity to be interviewed for an "Innovators of Public Safety" podcast recently by Matthew White, and got to look back at the first 10+ years of my career as a police officer in Singapore, during my sabbatical in Boston. We spoke about how the Singapore Police Force has constantly tried to innovate through various methodologies, people development, and technological investments that have helped it stay future-ready - from my perspective and work experience as one officer in the broader organization. Singapore is known as a safe country, but little has been said about the gruelling work that occurs behind the scenes, to safeguard the residents of our tiny island. This was a case in my early days as an investigator that I was able to assist in a major investigation, where I saw first-hand the great lengths that police officers go through to solve crimes. Some may ask why I consider this "fun", but I can speak of this unforgettable experience more fondly now that the case is solved. This mix of the ability to help others, the intellectual challenge in chasing down leads as well as the experience-driven nature of the job that drives many of the men and women in blue to don their uniform daily and serve their communities, despite often being at the receiving end of the worst of humanity. It is the unseen acts of sacrifice police officers perform daily across the world that I hope to highlight with the interview, as well as the good (and difficult) innovation work done by police units behind the scenes to keep their jurisdictions safe.
