Even if their English is pretty good, many non-native professionals, struggle with confidence in meetings and international events. Are you one of them? If so, here are 3 reasons why you are not feeling the same as when you speak in your native language. 1. Vocabulary: It's not just about knowing more words, but the right words for your industry and the specific situations you find yourself in. 2. Thinking in English: Translating in your head slows you down and can make you sound less confident. The more you practice thinking directly in English, the smoother your conversations will flow. 3. Fear of Mistakes: Everyone makes them! Don't let the fear of a little grammar slip-up keep you from speaking up. Your ideas and expertise matter more than perfect English. Thanks for sharing! Never thought about how even strong English speakers might struggle in those situations. Love the point about focusing on ideas, not grammar. Sounds like your tips could be helpful for everyone in a meeting, not just non-native speakers!
Exactly Natasha, they are all fixable and lots of practice and right mindset are key to overcome those challenges
So true Natasha K., MBA, Even fluent speakers can feel wobbly in meetings. It's all about finding the right words, thinking in English, and not sweating the small mistakes!
Great points! Your ideas and expertise are what truly matter.
I find it really awkward trying to speak somebody else's language outside of their country. Lack of vocabulary certainly contributes, but even just saying "Hello," "Let's eat!" or "Thank you" in Japanese at a Japanese restaurant feels weird. My utilization and pronunciation are correct, it just somehow feels like cultural appropriation in my head. Even with the food items themselves. Mexican and Japanese are the only foods I don't feel weird pronouncing "correctly" (i.e. not Americanized).
Confidence is key in these situations. These could be game-changers for many!
Great advice!

7moI have definitely felt all of these things when traveling in Spanish speaking areas. I didn’t want to make mistakes and was definitely slowed down, but when I allowed myself to speak, people were always gracious and patient and that gave me more confidence to keep trying.
