Remember, confusion is your friend! 2. **The Interview Swerve:** When asked why you want the job, go off on a tangent about your childhood dreams of becoming a pirate. If you get a technical question, reply with "42" or just start singing the lyrics to "Bohemian Rhapsody." Unpredictability is key! As some People view that Experience doesn’t make a difference and Age again - Every one has to grow old - 55 years - 😂 3. **The Wardrobe Malfunction:** Show up to the interview dressed as if you're going to a costume party. At 27, I quit my stable corporate job to start a digital marketing agency from scratch. Sounds crazy, right? I was told I was throwing away security. That I was risking everything. I was told that I was naive. But let me tell you. Being an employee is like being a cog in a machine. You're replaceable. You're just a number. But when you're the owner, you're the machine. You're the one who makes things happen. I've seen the struggle. I've seen the late nights. The stress. The fear of failure. I've been there. But I've also seen the triumph. The joy of success. The pride of building something from nothing. That's why I started this agency. To create a place where employees aren't just numbers. Where they're valued. Where their ideas matter. I initially walked past the cake shop in Teignmouth shown in the photo, but when my brain caught up and registered the sheer range of delights on offer, I turned back and took the photo. Wow! How would you even begin to choose one? But what did I do? I took the photo and walked on towards the beach to go for a swim. I didn’t buy one, even though I love cream cakes. I’ve shown the photo to my kids and asked them which cake they would choose. They liked the pink one with sweets on top, but I pointed out that that would probably be really sickly and they’d regret choosing it and consider it a waste of money when half of it ends up in the bin. While it might be nice to be offered such a vast array of options when you’re looking to purchase a cream cake, I try to avoid ‘customer overload’ with my clients. Sometimes you need a bit of guidance when faced with so many options and research and evaluation projects are no exception. Three years ago last week I published the first post in what would be a series on how I changed my approach to finding a new job, and how it quickly led to a job that was created for me (literally... the job I was offered was not the job I initially applied for). Recently I've been seeing more and more posts across all of my social spaces about difficulties with job searches, ranging from ghosting to age discrimination to never even being acknowledged. Which sucks, and I don't doubt any of them are experiencing those things. However, I firmly believe that approaching your job search as if you're marketing the solution for a hiring manager's problem instead of as a job seeker in need of a new job has the real opportunity to overcome so many of the obstacles people are hitting. It's not an approach that is taught in many places that I've seen. And it's definitely not explained as a real marketing strategy for the layperson to use. So I've decided to re-share the series, starting with that first post. If nothing else, I hope it sparks continued conversation around the challenges people are facing in today's job market and help us find novel, effective solutions for them. What made me quit my job after 3 years? Finally, made a decision after a year of contemplation, a YEAR! What prompted me? - Lack of direction - (too many hats to wear!) - Started out as a writer and after two years of writing, the job changed direction. By the end of 2023, I realized "This is not why I joined this company!" "This is not working out in my favor" As soon as these thoughts hit me, I resigned. A little too late but better late than never, right? I learned one lesson at least, "If a job no longer aligns with your career goals, let it go!" I spent 3 years pouring my blood and sweat into that company as if I part owned it, lol. "What if I did the same for MYSELF?" the thought hit me like a bucket of water and I jumped ship! When I weighed what I was losing vs what I was gaining there, it cleared my vision. Naturally, leaving my job felt bittersweet. I was excited to explore new opportunities, at the same time, sad to leave a place that taught me a lot of lessons. But there is one thing I am sure of, I am glad that for once in my life (actually twice) I made a decision that was in MY best interest, the decision to get back to writing because that is what makes me happy and proud of myself. If you are in the same predicament, don't take too much time (like I did) to steer your life towards what's best for YOU! These are all transferable skills that can make you stand out in the applicant pool. Don't underestimate the power of your diverse background. I changed jobs twice in a month and it was the best thing for me. First, I left journalism. It was hard to leave, but ultimately it had become harder to stay. Shrinking budgets, constantly shifting expectations and the never-ending fear of either laying off my staff or being laid off myself. It was aging me FAST. And while it opened the door to some absolutely incredible life experiences, the tradeoffs just weren't worth it anymore. So I changed jobs. I jumped to a marketing startup and everyone was awesome. I met some great people, learned a ton in just a few weeks and appreciated the change of pace. But the job market doesn’t work on your schedule and, just as I was settling in, I got another offer. Do I leave? Do I stay? It was a hard choice, but ultimately you can’t help timing. Sometimes the right long-term move is going to be painful in the short term, but you have to keep that bigger picture in mind. You can change your mind, as long as you're prepared to deal with the consequences. And so I left again. I switched from marketing to media relations at iGO, and six months later I’m glad I did. I love the people, the pace and the challenge. I love that I still have journalism in my life, and that I can now see it with a different perspective. I accepted some short-term pain and if I could go back in time today, I’d do it again. So if you just zigged when you should have zagged, don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep the bigger picture in mind, and you’ll find your way through the short-term stumbles.
