“Are You Proud of Your Career?”
Some time ago, an executive recruiter reached out to me. As we talked, it became clear that the opportunity wasn’t the right fit for me. But as we wrapped up, the recruiter asked a question that lingered long after the conversation ended: “Are you proud of your career?”
That simple question led me to reflect on a key truth: there is no single “right” career path. Over the years, I’ve made choices aligned with different life phases. I’ve taken on stretch roles that pushed me, embraced lateral moves to prioritize time with my family, switched industries, worked internationally, and contributed to companies at various stages of growth.
Each of these decisions was deliberate, not based on a pre-defined formula, but on what felt right for me at the time. Every experience—whether it was a leap or a lateral move—added depth to my skill set and broadened my perspective.
As you start or continue to build your career, remember: there’s no one-size-fits-all path to success. No magic combination of roles, experiences, or companies guarantees it. The best path is the one that helps you grow—both personally and professionally—while staying true to your values and aspirations.
So, ask yourself: Are you proud of your journey? Because that’s what matters most.
