Do you have the best team??We all need some stars...!! We all want them in our team! (SPOILER ALERT...there is a big BUT coming...) ENJOY this fantastic video with Adam Grant. Adam Grant is an incredible guy, who is a LeBron James and Shane Battier in his field, all in one! (I guarantee, you will love this video even if you are not a basketball fanatic) Below is my very personal take on this... I worked in a place where those that were perceived as stars, as major individual contributors to the profit line, were treated as such! That approach has certainly raised the confidence of those “stars” in the short term and exposed them to more opportunities, retained them from competitors, and improved the bottom line. But in some cases, in the long term, it has been detrimental to their own confidence and even to the bottom line of the institution!!! Don’t get me wrong, stars are key and can make a company lead in their industry, but the right organizational culture is essential. Humility and a thirst for growth and improvement can swiftly disappear when there are too many stars… What happens to their confidence when they are not performing, in an environment where they expected to always exceed and outperform? Some may hide their faults, blame others, create barriers, burnout as they put too much pressure on themselves…to meet that image of excellence promoted by the culture of the organization. As Adam Grant puts it simply “Lots of egos means infighting”. Have you got the right culture in your organization? Do you have the right balance between stars and role players? Is it a safe place for role players to speak up and add their views, their different perspective, so that the stars can shine even brighter? “Excellence is always striving to get better”. (Adam Grant) When was the last time that your organisation has reviewed its culture? When was the last time they have asked what can we improve? If you are in management, how would you like to see it changing? What can you do? Does your organization know how to spot a playmaker during an interview process? Do you? #leadership # management #organizationalculture

This video is about six minutes long. You might not think you'll watch the entire thing, but you probably will. Posting it here will lead to a large collective loss of productivity. I'm not sorry. (There are quite a few versions of this video floating around. This was the original. I saw one the other day that was 15 minutes long. I watched every second of it.) It seems like every book on culture or leadership or mentoring eventually gets around to Gregg Popovich. He's the coach of the San Antonio Spurs. He has been their coach for almost 30 years straight, which is the longest anyone has coached any professional team (playing anything) in the U.S. So many leadership books talk about Pop because he's incredibly good at creating culture and getting people to give their best. With the Spurs, he's build a really amazing team that plays basketball differently. The Spurs are wildly collaborative in a sport where it's very easy to over-emphasize one's self. (Honestly, though, other teams may have emulated the Spurs by now. Maybe they're not unique anymore, but rather just set a trend for decades? I'm not a basketball expert.) Pop loves his players and his coaches. He thanks them every year for allowing him to coach them. He spends as much time planning what they do away from the court as what they do on it. With few exceptions, his players are incredibly loyal to him and to the team. "The Culture Code" talks about Pop a lot. So do dozens of other business books. This video gives a nice look into why. This video makes me want to be part of a team. (In fact, I think I will...)

Willie Mays - The Catch - And Teamwork Among Willie Mays’ many remarkable feats “The Catch” stands out. My connection? A humorous add on anecdote about The Catch that I shared in speeches to highlight how easy it is to take credit for things you didn’t do and to dismiss the value of teamwork. After Mays made what many consider the most extraordinary catch in the history of baseball, the pitcher, Don Liddle, was immediately taken out of the game. Entering the dugout, Liddle joked, "I got my man!" Technically, he did. The record book shows he was the pitcher, and the batter was out. Yet in reality, Willie Mays and his team did it. Audiences laughed, got the message and remembered it. Clients sent details about the game, pictures and even a sculpture. As time and topics evolved, I phased out telling that story. Yet clients still asked: “Please tell that Willie Mays story again?” While I was still telling the story a lot, I happened to meet Willie Mays at an airline club. We had a few ‘road warrior moments,’ and I asked if Don Liddle actually said he got his man. Mays replied, "I don’t know. I was in centerfield." Then he grinned and added – “Don Liddle said a lot of funny things.” As with many road warrior meetings, we had that moment and moved on. Now, Willie Mays has moved on. Yet, the memory of his spirit, contributions, and “The Catch” remain. #WillieMays #TheCatch #Teamwork #Storytelling #StorySelling #CommunicationSkills #PresentationSkills Here’s a link to the Catch. https://lnkd.in/gnrFMQ7j
