Building a High-Value Culture: A Key Strategy of Successful ACOs For over a decade, ACOs have made great strides in fulfilling the promise of value-based care: a health care system that is less complex, more supportive, and focused on keeping patients healthy and delivering positive outcomes. How are successful ACOs achieving these goals? NAACOS conducted a series of interviews with leadership of high-performing ACOs and reviewed literature on ACO strategies to understand what goes into the “secret sauce” of ACO success, which uncovered five key “ingredients.” One of those ingredients is a high-value culture, driven by strong visionary leadership and a commitment to accountable care. Trust in leadership and a culture of continuous learning are vital to shift the organizational mindset to proactive, population health care. How is your organization working to create a culture of value? Health Data Innovations (HDI) works with ACOs, including a number quoted in this report, to solve the claims data integration challenges outlined in this report (pages 16-18)--specifically transforming data from disparate payer sources into a standardized, analytically ready dataset. We will be at the National Association of ACOs conference next week if you would like to learn more or talk in more detail!

It is nice to be able to say "value" but it is far more difficult to define it and collect the data. For instance, what is a good diet? What is adequate exercise? These are far more impactful to the long-term health of a patient with coronary disease than having a statin or platelet inhibitor prescribed for the patient. But the latter are easier to measure. For that matter, how do we know if the patient is even taking the medication? It is far easier to check off items in a note: how many systems did you review; did you document a differential diagnosis; did you document the complexity of a procedure? Until we solve the data collection problem, we will not have truly effective value-based care at scale. #valuebasedcare #populationhealth #datagovernance
Why is it taking so long for health systems to shift from fee-for-service to value-based care? Kaiser Permanente has been providing health-focused care for nearly 80 years. Every day we see the benefits of a model that prioritizes coordination, prevention, and delivery of evidence-based care at the right time and the right place. At Modern Healthcare ’s Leadership Symposium last week, I shared some of those benefits, including the value derived for our clinicians (the ability to focus on what they do best – treating patients), our patients (better health outcomes and a more seamless experience), and the system overall (reduced costs and a shared commitment to keep people healthy). It was a stimulating conversation that included aligned perspectives from other health care leaders, including Farzad Mostashari of Aledade, and Dr. Mohamed Diab, MBA, of CVS, guided by our moderator Michelle M. Stein of Modern Healthcare. I hope attendees left feeling as convinced as I am that now is the time for all health care providers to make meaningful progress on the journey to value-based care so that our health care system, our patients and our communities can fully realize the benefits of this approach. #ValueBasedCare #prevention #evidencebasedcare

At least a part of the answer, Andy Bindman, is that it’s easier for plans and providers to simply go through the motions of a FFS contract. Adding shared savings and shared risk is complicated, and there is enough complexity in healthcare. Simplifying the contracting process for VBC is not sexy or intuitive, but it’s a huge part of the actual answer, especially outside of large integrated plans/providers. #vbc

It was a privilege to be invited by KPJ HEALTHCARE UNIVERSITY this evening to listen to Prof Nora Colton from UCL Global Business School for Health on Collective Leadership and Systems Thinking. Her insights into these critical areas have left me inspired and motivated to implement these concepts in our healthcare practices. Collective Leadership in healthcare emphasizes the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders—patients, providers, and policymakers. By fostering a culture of shared responsibility and inclusivity, we can enhance decision-making processes and ultimately improve patient outcomes. This approach empowers teams to leverage diverse perspectives, leading to more innovative solutions in addressing healthcare challenges. Systems Thinking, on the other hand, encourages us to view healthcare as an interconnected system rather than isolated components. By understanding the complex relationships within the healthcare ecosystem, we can identify underlying issues and implement more effective interventions. This holistic perspective is essential for driving sustainable improvements and ensuring that our healthcare systems adapt to the evolving needs of society. Together, these frameworks pave the way for a more resilient and responsive healthcare in today's challenging landscape. #collectiveleadership #systemsthinking

OREGON ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) https://lnkd.in/guwcv7uw 🕛 Afternoon Session Discussion: Successfully Leading Change in Healthcare Organizations: The healthcare environment is constantly changing, and provider organizations must adapt in order to survive and thrive. Organizations are frequently asked to respond to legislative changes, market fluctuations, safety concerns, and patient or staff demands. The success of major change implementation hinges on how it communicated and how it impacts individuals and processes in the organization. Stakeholders frequently resist change for many reasons, including not having enough information, fear of how the change will affect them, comfort with the status quo, and not understanding the benefits of the change. For change to truly be effective, a leader must know how to effectively communicate the benefits, minimize the barriers, and describe the processes. Learn from your peers as they share approaches that were successful and those that impeded the change process. #ACHE #HealthcareLeadership #ChangeManagement #FallConference2024
