"𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭, 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝." Creating inclusive classrooms is deeply personal and goes far beyond acknowledging that students with disabilities have the same rights as their peers—they absolutely do. It's also more than believing that "every child can learn"—they certainly can. It’s about fundamentally rethinking how we view disability and recognizing that building an inclusive world starts with us, right in our own classrooms. These are the places where our attitudes towards disability become visible, shaping both the obstacles to inclusion and the paths to achieving true educational equity. Here’s what educators can do - ✨𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 ✨𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 ✨𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 ✨𝗕𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 By embracing these changes, we can lead with our hearts and create a more inclusive world ~ 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚. #InclusiveEducation #SocialModelOfDisability #AccessibleClassrooms #EveryLearnerMatters #EducationForAll #TeachDifferently #InclusionMatters #DiversityInEducation #ChangeMakersInEducation #EmpowerEveryStudent

Creating an Inclusive Future: Rethinking Education for Students with Disabilities On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I am proud to share my article on how we can amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities through an inclusive education system. This year’s theme reminds us of the urgent need to rethink our practices in education: 🔹 Are schools prioritizing academic perfection over the well-being and potential of every child? 🔹 How can we shift from exclusion to fostering resilience, diversity, and equity in education? The path forward lies in collaboration—between schools, the Directorate of Education, parents, and the community. Inclusion must be more than a policy; it should be a lived practice where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to lead. Let’s create an education system where “Every Child Matters” isn’t just a slogan, but a reality for every student, regardless of ability. 🔗 Read my article attached: 💬 I’d love to hear your thoughts—how do you see inclusion shaping our education system? #InclusiveEducation #LeadershipForInclusion #EveryChildMatters #IDPD2024 #SocialWorkMatters

Every child has the right to a high-quality education. To ensure our public schools are accessible for students with disability, a $10 million investment funded 94 projects in close to 40 schools in the 2023-24 financial year. From ramps and new doors to dedicated spaces for regulation and accessible playgrounds, these upgrades have improved accessibility in our schools. These upgrades were delivered as a part of the Education Directorate’s commitment to creating inclusive school environments, as outlined in the Inclusive Education: A Disability Inclusion Strategy for ACT Public Schools 2024-2034. The Strategy aims to deliver greater inclusion for students with disability across all ACT public schools by making sure schools have the support they need to meet the needs of all learners. To all the professionals working with children and families—especially those with disabilities—and to parents navigating the journey of raising confident, capable kids: This is my oldest son, Michael. He is #blind. And yes, that’s him vacuuming his home—a home several states away from me, where he lives and works independently. This Thanksgiving, he hosted our family and some friends in his gorgeous (and very clean!) home. For those of you who wonder if and how children with disabilities can thrive, I hope this moment gives you a clear picture. Here’s the key: Thriving doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built with intention. Over the years, I’ve leaned heavily on the #THRIVER Formula for Success, which we teach through the nonprofit I co-founded, Thriving Blind Academy. This formula focuses on foundational elements every child needs to grow into their potential: #Tools: Equipping children with the right skills, technology, and resources to access the world. #Handicap (as in golf): Leveling the playing field through accommodations, not handouts. #Responsibility: Giving kids age-appropriate tasks to build confidence and accountability. #Inter/Independence: Teaching collaboration with others while fostering their ability to live independently. #Value: Helping children understand their inherent worth and contributions to the world. #Emotion: Building resilience and emotional intelligence to navigate life’s challenges. #Risktaking: Encouraging children to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and learn through experience. This formula wasn’t just something I applied at home—it’s the same framework we teach to families, educators, and professionals in our #Thrivingblind community to empower children and their families. Michael’s journey is proof that all the hard work, advocacy, and exhaustion are worth it. The IEP meetings, the fight for services, the insistence on chores even when it would have been easier to do it ourselves—it all adds up to this: a thriving adult who embraces life with confidence, pride, and independence. If you’re working with children or raising one, keep going. Keep showing up, advocating, and believing in their potential. You are setting the foundation for a future where they don’t just survive—they THRIVE. #Accessibility #Inclusion #THRIVERFormula #Parenting #Education #Independence #ThrivingBlindAcademy #thrive
