Notes of an instructional designer… One of the things I love most about instructional design is how it brings together so many different elements. It’s truly cross-disciplinary and draws from a wide range of fields, such as: · Design thinking · Cognitive science · Technology · Learning science · Psychology · The art of communication · Educational theory · Graphic design · Multimedia development · User experience design I'm continually amazed by how much depth there is to this job… and all that complexity? It’s an endless source of inspiration for me. There's always something new to explore and learn. Sure, it can be challenging at times… but that’s what makes being an instructional designer so captivating and rewarding!

How do instructional designers actually spend their day? This is something I wondered as I was changing careers. I knew the tasks an instructional designer was responsible for, but I wasn't sure what that looked like day-to-day. Maybe you're transitioning to instructional design and wondering the same thing. Let me demystify it for you! The Devlin Peck team surveyed over 1,000 instructional designers to find out what life was actually like on the job. In this week's video, I use that survey data to paint a picture of what a month may look like and we even focus on a day in the life of an instructional designer. Check it out with the link in the comments below! If you're an ID, what task(s) take up the majority of your day-to-day work? If you're new to ID, is there anything that surprised you? Let us know! #LinkedInWithDevlin #InstructionalDesign #Learning #LearningAndDevelopment #eLearning

Lessons Learned: Finding an Instructional Designer Role in the U.S. as an International Applicant (2024) Read the full post on Medium, as LinkedIn has a limit on post length. 💻 Job Application Statistics - Duration: Began applying in January and received an offer in September—a job search spanning 8 months. - Applications sent: 1,144 - Interview invitations/tasks: 48 companies/universities (counted by organization, not individual rounds, usually more than one round) - Offers received: 3 📚 Key Lessons Learned (Specifically for Instructional Designers) 1. Direct Experience Matters Most Employers place a higher value on direct, hands-on experience in the specific role than on potential, transferable skills, or even degrees. The more closely aligned your experience is with the job description, the better your chances. 2. Build Skills Immediately and Showcase Them in a Portfolio If you lack direct experience, compensate by demonstrating strong, relevant skills. - Harsh reality: Without direct experience, you’ll need to apply to significantly more positions to land a role. - Actionable tip: Build a portfolio that highlights your ability to perform key tasks, even if they’re hypothetical or project-based. 3. Align Your Resume with Job Descriptions Employers are looking for specific skills, outputs, and outcomes. - My process: I analyzed job postings from around 10 employers to map common responsibilities and requirements. Then I tailored my resume to highlight those aspects of my previous experience. - Quantity vs. quality: Early on, I focused on applying only to employers whose job descriptions I liked. However, I quickly learned that 2024 is an employer-driven market. Applying in higher volume and letting employers choose yielded better results. If anyone is interested, I can share insights into the common questions and processes in instructional design interviews.

An interviewer I had prior to Franciscan asked me the question: "Have you ever been asked to do something that wasn't a part of your job description?" And -yes- I mean... job descriptions can be pretty vague. I have come to the realization that the reason for that is because there is a lack of understanding of what an instructional designer is. I think that having a type of career where people ask "What's that" is very liberating! I can really get creative with this but here is a concise definition of what and ID-er is and what he or she does is left up to interpretation. An instructional designer uses or facilitates the instructional design process (like ADDIE- or Dick, Carey, and Carey methods) to design, develop, and test educational tools, modules, and training programs to test their effectiveness in knowledge transfer. I have been getting out from behind my desk as a "developer" to discover the different stages of education at Franciscan. At a committee for falls and mobility, there was a question as to why I was there. Reasonable inquiry as I don't work with patients. My short answer is "I am a systems thinker." Last year I worked with subject matter experts to develop a WBT (Web-based- training) module on a mobility protocol and its documentation. To find out during this meeting that different forms of training (one-on-one and WBT) for this particular documentation has been seen to be a challenge for staff was eye opening. When education is provided- a good ROI is (believe it or not) a part of what an instructional designer does. I get projects completed and assigned. But now I do want to spend some more time to be flexible in my inquiry. All of that is to say it is not in my "job description" but it is what I do. (Below is a picture of me with a camera about ready to record a demonstration of an assisted fall.) #instructionaldesign #education #adulteducation
