TODAY'S HEALTHCARE NEWS: The Biden Administration has CMS addressing obesity head-on by proposing that #Medicare and #Medicaid cover groundbreaking anti-obesity medications. Nancy Glick, Director of Food and Nutrition Policy at the National Consumers League, calls the proposal "a major step forward in ensuring quality care for adults with obesity." This move could dramatically improve health outcomes for 7.4 million Americans, save lives, and close the treatment gaps in obesity care. Why it matters: -Obesity is the most widespread chronic disease in the U.S., linked to 230+ other conditions. -The proposed rule would reduce out-of-pocket expenses for anti-obesity medications by up to 95%. -Only 10% of individuals with obesity currently receive medical help. The National Consumers League celebrates this step forward in healthcare equity. Let’s support policies that prioritize better health for all.

There is an ever-increasing need for effective management of diabetes in today's health care climate due to the rising prevalence of diabetes worldwide. According to the International Diabetes Federation, it is estimated that almost 537 million adults are currently living with diabetes, which is expected to rise to 643 million by 2030. Given the increase in this trend, clinical professionals have to shoulder the responsibility for enhancing comprehensive diabetes care in complications prevention and improvement in patient outcomes to make the disease burden on health systems more bearable. One of the most high-impact areas in managing diabetes is patient education. Healthcare providers in the clinic should be able to provide information and skills to the patients related to their disease management. Education can empower patients to take responsibility for their health by showing them the importance of monitoring blood glucose, adherence to medication schedules, dietary management, and other lifestyle changes. The clinicians play an important role in simplifying the necessary information so that patients can better understand how their actions directly contribute or help improve their condition. Knowledge of this kind often increases compliance while making the relationship between the patient and health professional mutual. A guide can facilitate and improve the outcomes of clinical intervention and management practices of diabetic patients. #DiabetesManagement #Healthcare #PatientCare #ClinicalImpact #DiabetesPrevention #LinkedIn #clinicalPharmacy #Research #Diabetes #Pharmacist #Doctors #Doctor

Advocates Needed to Ensure MNT is Accessible for Seniors Passage of the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act would be a win-win for the profession and the communities Academy members serve. If the MNT Act is passed, Academy members would receive more opportunities for reimbursement while also addressing the gap in care for our country’s seniors who only have access to MNT for diabetes and renal disease — a crucial step needed to achieve health equity for racial and ethnic minority populations. 💡 Diabetes is becoming a major cost driver for employer-sponsored health plans. The time to act is now. 📈 Here's why: The younger working population is seeing a sharp rise in diabetes diagnoses, leading to higher prescription costs—costs that fall on private drug plans, not the public system. With new, expensive treatments and a growing number of cases, plan sponsors can no longer ignore the upward trend in healthcare costs. The increase in diabetes cases and the resulting strain on drug plans highlights the importance of enhancing access to a variety of health benefits. Programs like medication support, personalized health and nutrition coaching, and chronic disease management aren’t just nice to have—they can make a real difference in people's lives and help manage costs in the long run. I recall the days of complex, cumbersome, and partially effective treatments for Hepatitis C that were localized in specialty practices. Had two back to back sessions with care providers outside GI & Hepatology and it is amazing how care for Hepatitis C is finally transitioning into primary care. Trajectory of obesity care in next 10-15 years will take exactly the same path. Medications for weight management will be plenty and become cheaper (e.g., majority of Medicaid programs now cover hepatitis C medications). Prohibitive costs will become manageable. Access to medications will improve. As I have said before, the real bottleneck will be shortage of providers and support staff. Overburdened primary care physicians, who until now were able to ignore a chronic disease as no treatment was available, will have to deal with this. As the demographic of this chronic disease (i.e., obesity or Chronic Adipose-Related Metabolic Dysfunction, as I prefer to call it) is vast, in the short term, direct to consumer solutions (or care for the privileged patient population) will thrive. However, if we took this GLP revolution as a catalyst to solve the problem for the long term, we will need to empower the health care providers and align it with incentives that directly trickle down to them. #obesity #weightmanagement #accesstocare #healthcare #healthcarecosts #accessiblehealthcare #hepatitisc #metabolichealth #healthcareonlinkedin
