LANDSLIDES & LOSS OF LIFE - A PERENNIAL PROBLEM   National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Department of Space, Hyderabad published a book on “Landslide Atlas of India” in February 2023.   The recent landslide in Wayanad, Kerala is shocked entire India and me too. We lost precious lives once again. 256 people dead and 200 people missing (Ref. https://lnkd.in/d6VCUsFs).   I read the report published by NRSC and ISRO. The details regarding these landslides presented in form of images. These are around 45 pages, while text information shared in 16 pages. Lots of efforts invested for drafting this book.   What we want to know is reasons for these landslides. Following reasons mentioned in this book. 01.  Rainfall, 02.  Undercutting of slopes due to flooding or excavation 03.  Earthquakes 04.  Over grazing by cattle 05.  Terrain cutting 06.  Excessive Development and 07.  Snowmelt and other natural causes   As per my view, there are various reasons for such landslides. As per my understanding and view, we will witness many more such landslides and loss of life, if necessary action not taken in time.   1.     Cutting trees from hill top for agriculture such as tea and coffee 2.     Cutting trees from hill and hill slop for bungalow and farm houses 3.     Building roads by cutting hill slope and damaging vegetation root network 4.     Absence of vegetation on slope post road infrastructure development 5.     Loss and damage of interconnected tap toots network 6.     Monoculture tree plantation 7.     Inadequate efforts of re-plantation 8.     Large forest fire and loosing of base soil due to root network damage 9.     Type of soil and heavy rainfall 10.  Diverting forest road and diversion of river flow   Like these, Natural calamities also play important role in landslide.   I think, in hilly area, cutting of even single tree even from private farm, field or and land shall be completely banned / prohibited. We must stop interfering with nature and altering its natural order. As long as we keep doing such activities and harm to nature we will face such event regularly. The loss of human life is preventable but our own deliberate actions keep people dying and we do not feel remorseful about it, unfortunately. Forest fires in Mount Zepa Since last week, Mount Zepa, part of the Munella Nature Park, in the Mirdita region has been facing an alarming fire spread situation. In her monitoring visit, the PPNEA team saw from up close, several hectares of burnt forest. The situation is very concerning because unfortunately, the forest fires are still active in the area. Together with PPNEA, many local people, the firefighting teams, military personnel, and staff from the Mirdita Municipality, were all working tirelessly to control the fire spread. The forest fires in this region are seriously threatening human health, nature, and endangered species such as the Balkan lynx. In such cases, a stronger reaction is expected from the relevant institutions. To prevent forest fires and this devastating situation where all the landscape is under flames and burnt in several hectares, it is critical to act immediately. The forest fires are still active and we must act immediately and with responsibility to stop the fire spread and protect our nature. #BalkanLynxRecoveryProgramme

On December 7, 1988, at 11:41 AM local time, a devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Armenia. Known as the Spitak Earthquake, it claimed the lives of an estimated 25,000 people, injured tens of thousands more, and left nearly half a million homeless. Entire cities, including Spitak, Gyumri, and Vanadzor, were severely damaged, with some areas almost completely destroyed. This disaster not only tested the resilience of the Armenian people but also highlighted the importance of international solidarity. Aid poured in from over 100 countries, showcasing the global capacity for compassion in the face of tragedy. The earthquake also exposed vulnerabilities in infrastructure and disaster preparedness, prompting a hard look at building codes, urban planning, and emergency response systems worldwide. It is a day of remembrance and reflection. The EU mobilises assistance for wildfires in Madeira. Following Portugal’s activation of the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism, the European Commission has deployed 2 Canadair planes from the #rescEU reserve in Spain to support the emergency response. The Copernicus emergency satellite system has also been activated to provide maps. #EUSolidarity is in action.
