National Environment Agency’s Post

Singapore continues to lead in innovative dengue prevention strategies. At the 8th Singapore International Dengue Workshop (SIDW), Minister Grace Fu announced the expansion of #ProjectWolbachiaSG to achieve 50% coverage of households by 2026. NEA’s 10-year study has shown promising outcomes at the study sites: • 80% to 90% decrease in Aedes aegypti mosquito population • 75% reduction in dengue risk • 45% reduced likelihood of dengue for residents in adjacent areas NEA will also pilot the Wolbachia suppression technology in areas with active, intense dengue transmission, to understand its utility in interrupting the development of large clusters. If effective, this new application of Wolbachia as a cluster management tool could complement traditional outbreak response operations. This edition of SIDW brings together health officials and, for the first time, city planners from 24 countries, emphasising cross-sector collaboration in controlling Aedes-borne diseases. Themed "Bridging Sectors for a Dengue-Free City", SIDW 2024 is jointly organised by NEA’s Environmental Health Institute, the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore, and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).
