Really interesting to think about the unique fuel challenges in NI. Domestic oil tanks cause specific funding issues owing to firms needing payment upfront and in full, and only being willing to provide fuel when filling tanks entirely💰. Earlier today Tim Rooney from Salad Money was on BBC Moneybox sharing the shocking stats on problem gambling from their recent report. The report analysed the finances of people on low incomes who applied for loans found a third were declined because of 'excessive gambling'. Through the use of open banking data Salad Money identified 33% gambled up to £100 a month and a shocking 10% over £1000. And 1% of applicants were gambling and average of £5760 a month. 😲 13% make three gambling transactions every day. Credit bureau data is ineffective at identifying gambling propensity. But Salad Money's data showed 76% of heavy gamblers had borrowed elsewhere and 10% were repaying over £1000 a month in loans. Salad Money's data showed numerous applicants’ spending on gambling exceeded their “wins” considerably. All had significant debt repayment commitments. The Consumer Duty is clear about the need to protect customers for whom further lending might exacerbate addictions such as gambling. In many cases these customers had both significant gambling activity and high levels of debt – yet multiple firms granted new loans to them in the months before they applied to Salad Money. Salad declined all of these applicants and signposted gambling support.
