From FOI to fiasco: How James Cleverly's trip burned through a foodbank's annual budget...! After attending a fundraiser for our local food bank yesterday, I read how the former Home Secretary spent a jaw-dropping £165,561 (on chartering a private jet) and £9,803.20 (£655 per person, on catering) of taxpayers' money for a one-day trip to Rwanda. That’s right! While many people in the UK are struggling to afford their weekly grocery shop, Government officials are dining at 30,000 feet. This incident - revealed through a freedom of information request, shows both misplaced priorities within the UK government and the importance of access to information. When questioned about these expenses, the government’s justification was as flimsy as the airline food they served. Apparently, they needed to transport cooking equipment. Because nothing says “responsible governance” like bringing your own chef along for the ride! And let’s not forget the actual purpose of this trip: the much-criticised and hugely problematic Rwanda deportation scheme... The scheme that's achieved precisely nothing. Well, nothing except for some well-fed officials, apparently. Thank goodness for freedom of information requests! Without it, these expenditures might have remained hidden from public scrutiny. Clearly, this scandal highlights the crucial role of transparency in government operations, the need for greater scrutiny of ministerial expenses and evaluation of how public funds are allocated, especially for controversial and ineffective policies. But overall, I think our leaders must realise that true leadership is not about lavish meals or private jets. It is about serving the people who put them in office. So huge thanks to all those who put the fundraiser together yesterday. And to all those who help and volunteer in our local foodbank and beyond. Until the politicians get their act together, hope you and others will keep working to fill the gaps they leave behind! We must do all we can to support each other and our communities! #UK #RightToKnow #FreedomOfInformation #transparency #PublicSpending #poverty #excess #London #Islington #community https://lnkd.in/e-XmDDgT

Grim Warning from NTIA: Is This the End of UK Clubs? The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) has just issued a stark warning: UK Clubs could vanish by 31.12.29. With 37% of clubs gone since March 2020—3 clubs per week— 150 Clubs per year - if this trend continues, we’re facing the Last Night Out before nightclubs disappear from our culture forever. Clubs like Fabric, Ministry of Sound and SubClub are more than venues—they’re cultural landmarks that foster creativity, community, and the heartbeat of our cities. The NTIA has launched #TheLastNightOut campaign to fight back, calling for government intervention to save our nightlife. Without urgent action, we risk losing a vital part of our identity and economy. Sign the petition to support the cause, and let’s ensure 31.12.29 isn't the end... https://buff.ly/4dUs2WG #SaveOurNightlife #CulturalHeritage #LastNightOut #NightclubCulture

In this briefing for LGiU Australia Marcus Spiller and I share some thoughts on the crucial role that public markets can play in community wealth-building, providing affordable food and a sense of community. #publicmarkets #foodsystems
Earlier this week the Federal Government accepted all the recommendations in the final report of an inquiry into supermarket misconduct. Check out this week’s briefing by Fiona Whitworth and Marcus Spiller which examines the critical role that municipal markets play in the local food distribution system, alongside major and independent supermarkets. Our local markets enhance system resilience, and promote innovation and diversification. Check out the full briefing here: https://lnkd.in/gQVCgKUp Not sure if your council is an LGiU Australia member? Reserve Bank of New Zealand needs to realize that it is killing the patient (or may be it has already killed the patient) in order to cure the disease. The high interest rates has resulted in high mortgage and rent payments thus leaving the citizens with very little disposable income to spend on retail and hospitality. Record numbers of people have left NZ for good in the last three years. What Reserve Bank of New Zealand has failed to realize is people have literally given up hopes on NZ.
