How do we work together to embed these standards into practice?
Yesterday, NHS England launched their new Culture of Care Standards for Mental Health Inpatient Care including those with a learning disability and autistic people. The RRN welcomes these new, coproduced standards, signalling an intention to implement positive ward cultures across mental health inpatient settings, to improve experiences of both staff and people receiving inpatient care. September is Suicide Prevention Month. At Array, we're committed to providing effective and high-quality mental health services by implementing the Zero Suicide Model. The approach shifts suicide prevention to a shared responsibility across the healthcare system. Screening is a key component and here's why that matters: ▪ Universal screening can increase the identification of at-risk patients ▪ Most individuals who die by suicide visit a healthcare provider in the year prior ▪ Access to the most risk-informed and least intrusive levels of care can be lifesaving Suicide can be preventable. The first step is asking. Gain insight into how Array implements Zero Suicide in all aspects of our clinical work, from hospital to outpatient clinic to home. https://lnkd.in/g8adaJj6 #SPM2024 #MentalHealthMatters #SuicidePrevention #HealthcareInnovations

⚠️ Tiwa talks about some really distressing things she experienced in hospital - please watch with caution. ⚠️ How the next government can improve mental health services.👇 Starting with number 1. Raise the standard of mental health hospitals 🏥 Tiwa is one of our media volunteers. Last year she told MPs in parliament what it’s like to be in a mental health hospital. Listen to her story to hear about the current state of inpatient care within a mental health hospital. It’s not good enough. We want the next UK government to raise the standard of mental health hospitals. That means we want to see more staff with better training and a focus on making mental health hospitals a safe, comfortable place to recover in. 73% of voters back our call for more, better-trained staff in mental health hospitals. These changes aren’t just desperately needed, voters want them too.

Good to hear Mind raising awareness of restrictive harmful practices. Thanks Tiwa for sharing your story. I experienced this 30 years ago and have been alarmed to see that so much surveillance, restraint, seclusion and forced treatment not only still happens but arguably is much worse. It’s unbelievable to me that distressed teens - or adults of any age - are treated in such a carceral way when they’ve committed no crime - sometimes not only transported with no warning but in handcuffs or cages. Or that so much public money is wasted outsourcing “risk” to the private sector and then turning a blind eye to the consequences of coercive “care”. Do imagine it, and then consider if you have influence to make change and ask yourself what will you do? How can you enable people like Tiwa to follow through on her passion to make a difference. Why is aftercare planning an afterthought, and often non-existent. Why have all the care coordinators gone? Through compassionate mental health I’ve met so many people who have been in and out of services for years with no support to stay well and stay out of hospital. And others who are excluded from meaningful help. The time spent on a hospital ward should always be healing, restful and helpful and should never make people feel unsafe or destroy the trust that’s needed in a therapeutic relationship. 🌱So how can mental health staff know how to truly de-escalate in non-violent ways? 🌱How can we create therapeutic environments where people’s overwhelm and distress is less likely to occur in the first place? 🌱 What does relational, compassionate care look and feel like? 🌱 And what about nourishment? How can we harness the healing power of food, supporting local growers to create regenerative approaches to health 🌱And what about the #MoralInjury to all those forced to work in restrictive ways often without enough training to keep themselves and others safe? Why is a giant crash pad in a training room never going to give staff the skills and inner resources needed to learn to down escalate their own distress so they calmly do what Tiwa says the men that restrained her could not do. "Healthcare should heal, not harm. But for too many, the carceral state controls mental health care. Here’s what that looks like 👇🏽" 🚔 Police respond to mental health crises — turning care into criminalization. 🏥 Psychiatric holds and restraints — often feel more like punishment than help. 📋 Mandatory reporting systems — force patients into the justice system for issues needing care, not control. 🧑🏿⚕️ Healthcare providers — rarely learn about the carceral state’s impact, yet it’s critical to doing no harm. 👭🏾 Antiracist alternatives — we need community-led crisis response and culturally informed care, not coercion. I’m working toward legislation that mandates healthcare providers receive training on the carceral state and antiracist mental health practices. Join the movement to make mental health care about healing, not handcuffs. 💜 Follow, share, subscribe to my newsletter. https://lnkd.in/g43YtaYZ #MentalHealthJustice #AbolitionistMentalHealth #CarceralState #EndPoliceInMentalHealth #CommunityCareNotCops #TransformMentalHealth #LegislationForChange
