Here's to a Happy New Year! We broke 20% in 2024! In October 2022, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the Million Women in Construction Initiative. At the time of the announcement, women comprised approximately 11% of the construction workforce, with only 4% in skilled trades. The initiative seeks to increase women’s participation to about 20% by adding one million women to the industry. In 2022, we were sitting at almost 18% and it is especially exciting to note that participation by women in our apprenticeship programs has reached 20% for the first time, aligning with national efforts to increase representation in the construction industry. Today, I’m proud to share that the NECA/IBEW Local 48 Electrical Training Center has reached 20% participation by women in our apprenticeship programs for the first time! This milestone reflects the dedication of our team, partners, and the broader apprenticeship community to making meaningful strides toward gender equity in construction. Whether through pre-apprenticeship pathways, direct entry opportunities, or intentional outreach and mentorship, we’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that women not only join our programs but thrive in their careers. This achievement is about more than just numbers—it’s about creating opportunities, breaking down barriers, and ensuring the future of the skilled trades is diverse and inclusive. To the women in our programs: you inspire us every day with your talent, hard work, and passion. To our partners and supporters: thank you for sharing this vision and helping make it a reality. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive industry. Here’s to continued progress and even greater achievements ahead! 💪👷♀️⚡ Oregon Tradeswomen Constructing Hope Pre-Apprenticeship Program #DiversityInConstruction #WomenInElectrical #Apprenticeships #WomenInTrades #MillionWomenInConstruction #NECAIBEW #BuildingTheFuture

Scale deep - culture change through families - after attending the BC Indigenous Apprenticeship Forum, BCATTA in Terrace on Nisga'a Lands and the CCWESTT (Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology) Navigating Systemic Barriers conference in Victoria, I feel thankful for all I have learned from the wonderful people out there supporting apprentices and potential tradespeople, current leaders and leaders to be, especially those from *currently!* underrepresented groups. Now, to put some of it into action! Step 1 - reflecting on what it means to scale deep - one of the lessons from CCWESTT presenters - what can we do to "open hearts and minds to understanding different cultural values and beliefs, in order to be inclusive in how we relate", to transform culture and organizations. My research at Royal Roads for the Strategic Enrolment Management certificate looked at systems thinking to support female participation and success in trades and how post-secondary institutions are at the centre of the system and can therefore influence the many parts of it, as well as multiplying the affects of all. Following our recent experience with inviting parents and their middle-high school-aged children onto campus together for a Try a Trade night with CHBA and School District 23, and a presentation at CCWESTT from Family Services of Peel on family environments that facilitate female entry into SETT (Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology), I think we need to consider more deeply how our connections with families can influence culture and systems change. Presenters at the BC Indigenous Apprenticeship Forum also noted this essential connection and I think we are too often caught up in our role as adult educators (or even hosts for camps for children and youth) to make space for the community that raises our students. #CCWEST2024

Today's focus for National Apprenticeship Week is Women in Apprenticeship Female contractor business owners are not hard to find in the PHCC membership, and many of them started as apprentices. There's plenty of good guidance out there for women interested in starting in the trades, but start with reaching out to your state PHCC chapter to get connected with a community of employers looking for people eager to learn and work! https://ow.ly/YKgb50UbkM1 #PHCC Educational Foundation #PHCC Academy® #Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors -National Association #NAW2024 #DecadeofNAW #ApprenticeshipUSA

🌟 Empowering Women in Trades, Apprenticeship, Engineering, Technology, and Other Under-Represented Fields in 2025 🌟 On this day in 1936, Barbara Hanley made history as Canada's first woman mayor, elected in Webbwood, Ontario. Her groundbreaking achievement continues to inspire women to pursue leadership roles in fields where they have been historically underrepresented. In 2025, Canada is making significant strides in supporting women in trades, apprenticeship, engineering, technology, and other vital sectors. Programs like the WIST General Carpenter Pre-Apprenticeship program at Conestoga College, which has been thriving for over 20 years, are expanding pathways for women to enter and excel in these fields. By ensuring equal access to education, training, and mentorship, we can empower women to thrive and contribute to a diverse and innovative workforce. Let's build a future where everyone has the freedom to achieve their full potential. 💪👩🔧👩🏭👩💻👩🔬 The attached picture shows Barbara Hanley front and center among her male colleagues at the 1936 Northern Ontario Mayors' Convention. #WomenInSTEM #Trades #Apprenticeship #Engineering #Technology #DiversityAndInclusion #BarbaraHanley

https://lnkd.in/gBTQJFPa Some great information in this about the challenges and rewards of vocational training versus obtaining a degree. It also emphasizes a more holistic approach combining classroom training, internships and other guidance versus just teaching someone how to weld. The other thing I found interesting, but not surprising, is how many parents are resistant to vocational ed programs because they want better opportunities for their kids which they believe only come from pursuing the University track in the German educational system. A hurdle we have here in the States as well. If you're interested in how a country with a solid history of apprenticeships and vocational training is adapting that model to the 21st century this is a wonderful article peruse. I certainly think many parts of Germany's approach would make sense to implement here in the States.

National Apprenticeship Week 2024 is coming soon! NAW is a nationwide celebration where employers, industry representatives, labor organizations, community-based organizations, workforce partners, educational institutions, and Federal, State, and Local government agencies host events to showcase the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeship for strengthening our economy by developing a highly skilled workforce to meet industry needs, creating pathways for career seekers to catapult into good jobs, and advancing racial and gender equity. This year NAW will take place November 17-23. On Thursday the 20th, the theme will be “Women in Apprenticeship”. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Regulations for Registered Apprenticeship helps employers reduce barriers to Registered Apprenticeship for women and increase women’s participation in and completion of Registered Apprenticeship programs. Currently, women consist of just under 15 percent of the overall active Registered Apprenticeship System, which suggests sizable growth potential remains for women. Strategies for supporting and encouraging women to join RA programs as well as success stories of women in apprenticeships will be featured and celebrated during NAW 2024. Be sure to stay tuned for more details! Check out more info in the comments! #NAW2024 #DecadeofNAW #ApprenticeshipUSA #RegisteredApprenticeship #NewApprenticeshipOpportunities #GlobalImpact

Today, we’ve published new research highlighting the gender barrier for female school leavers looking to enter the Trade industry. Ahead of GCSE and A-Level result days, our data found that half of girls leaving school believe that boys receive more opportunities to enter the sector that they do. Three-quarters of surveyed girls aged between 16-18 say they’re unaware of any female tradespeople, highlighting a severe lack of role models in the industry. Only 2% of tradespeople are women, which needs to increase. We have pledged £1 million to fund trade apprenticeships and are working with Transfer to Transform – our apprenticeship and skills partners – to encourage and help promote this among girls and women.
