The topic that consistently trips up a Board of Directors is covered here by Kerry Diaz and Michael Corley. According to the Florida Nonprofit Alliance, 'CEO transitions are happening frequently and will continue to do so. One third of current CEOs will leave their jobs by 2026. More organizations experienced a CEO transition in 2023 than were expecting one in 2022, so there may be even more transitions – either quick or unplanned – to come.' Kerry and Michael apply their wisdom and insight to help develop a strategic framework to help plan for this important matter.
"How do you make the organization not dependent on or defined by one individual?" This question is the essence of this week's episode of I501(c)You with Kerry Diaz. From the first day, the CEO needs to be intentional about bringing your staff along. "Have you met a nonprofit CEO who thinks they have spare time?" When you bring your staff along and build them up to take on more responsibility, the CEO gets left to do "what they are uniquely qualified to do." CEO evaluations are an important responsibility of the Board of Directors. However, many nonprofit boards do not take the time to perform this annual function. The reason??? I suspect because they take time. It doesn't have to be complicated! An evaluation can be as simple as asking these 2 questions: - What is the CEO doing well? - What can they do better? From these two questions you should get a pretty good idea of the CEOs performance. (Although for the record, I do recommend a more thorough process.)
