National Numeracy’s Post

Denise Welch is our new Ambassador, and this discussion from Loose Women highlights brilliantly why we’re so glad to have her on board. She says: ”I’ve avoided numbers all my life, but now it’s time to stop running.” It’s #NumberConfidenceWeek. Did you know women are twice as anxious about using numbers as men? Join Denise and start feeling more confident about numbers today! 🎉 Read Denise’s story: https://bit.ly/4edNHcE #NumberConfidenceWeek

It is often not MATHs that we are scared of but the poor pedagogy attached to maths teaching, that feeling of being singled out, made to feel stupid and inadequate. That is not the fault if the subject but the teaching. Let's get the pedagogy and the self talk around maths to be positive. Things have improved greatly and we need to keep the positivity and growth mindset up in the subject. Especially in Y7-9.

Maths anxiety is becoming an increasing challenge, and it’s crucial that we work together to tackle it. At Dancing Digits, we’re helping to alleviate this by using movement to make maths fun and engaging from an early age. Through our programme, children develop a positive relationship with numbers, boost their confidence, and build essential mathematical skills— all while moving and having fun. By turning maths into an active, embodied experience, we’re helping children overcome anxiety and enjoy learning!

Really inspiring to hear someone on the TV tell their story in this way. So many people have lasting negative experiences of particular subjects at school and maths is right up there for some. Maths continues with us though, throughout life, so people with high maths anxiety can experience constant triggers and reminders, with avoidance and set-backs fuelling further anxiety and low confidence. Having Ambassadors such as Denise helps people appreciate they're not alone and that positive steps can be made towards building number confidence.
