Agriculture accounts for 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Reducing emissions from agricultural production, at country level, requires inter-ministry collaboration. The Ministry of Environment responsible for the achievement of a country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC’s) must work closely with the agricultural ministry to reduce emissions of the sector. The objective? Why should you care about collaboration? There have been a couple of big sustainability collaboration announcements in the last couple of weeks. While these are top-level and only the start, they are big steps in the right direction. Whether it is top level standards, GHG Protocol and the IFRS foundation, or the sector-specific collaboration between Agrecalc, the Farm Carbon Cutting Toolkit and Cool Farm Alliance, these announcements are great news. These collaborations will allow better understanding between standards and methodologies, reducing inconsistencies and inefficiencies in reporting. In Case You Missed It: Mitchell Hora seventh generation Iowa farmer and founder of Continuum Ag, authored an op-ed for Agri-Pulse Communications emphasizing the urgent need for collaboration between farmers and policymakers to support legislation to scale up domestic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. Hora argues that SAF presents an immense opportunity for American farmers, but successful implementation requires clear policies and resources from lawmakers. “If our nation is to realize the true long-term economic and environmental benefits of domestic SAF production, we need the right regulatory framework. Farmers proactively invest in sustainable farming practices and want to make the industry more climate-friendly, mindful that our livelihoods depend on the health of our land and air. If you work in the agricultural industry, you may be wondering what is going on with emissions reductions targets within Australia’s agricultural supply chain, and how does it affect farmers? In our June newsletter, NACC NRM's Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator Katrina Sasse talked about some of the key factors, after recently undertaking training in the area of Carbon Neutral Agriculture at University of Melbourne, led by Professor Richard Eckard of the Primary Industries Climate Challenges Centre. Katrina explained that a key take away from the course was that many major organisations in the agri-food supply chain have started setting their own targets to reduce emissions and even reach net zero, as a response to the Australian Government’s commitment to net zero by 2050. This means that agricultural suppliers and buyers will likely soon encourage or require farmers to determine and understand their baseline greenhouse gas emission figures on farm.
