This groundbreaking initiative at the U.S. Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA) in the Republic of the Marshall Islands will explore the feasibility of deploying a 17.5 MW OTEC system, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. This project is more than renewable energy; it’s about energy independence for remote U.S. military bases in tropical regions. The collaboration will also investigate seawater desalination, ensuring power and water resilience at critical installations. This contract is a transformative step toward integrating renewable energy into national defense strategies. 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆’𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 🔄 As Germany advances its energy transition, the expansion of wind energy often collides with military needs. Military requirements increasingly slow down or block projects, despite a national mandate to allocate 2 % of land to wind development. 🔍 A recent study by the Bundesverband WindEnergie e.V. provides clear results: As soon as military concerns come into play, the expansion of wind energy falters. 📊 Between 2020 - 2024, projects amounting to almost 5 GW were affected by military concerns. Less than 10% (486 MW) of these projects received approval. 🚫 However, neither military training areas nor helicopter low-flying routes are a fundamental problem, but rather the Bundeswehr's late and incomplete communication and its unwillingness to find compromise solutions.
