New horizons for green energy in Ukraine. For the first time in Ukraine, the State Enterprise “Guaranteed Buyer” announced an online auction to support enterprises that produce electricity from alternative sources through the state system Prozorro.Sale. The first lot will be an 11 MW annual quota for solar power generation. Under the terms of the auction, the station should be located on the left bank of the Dnipro River. This is an important step for the development of green energy and ensuring transparent competition in the market. The bidding will be based on the principle of price reduction, which will reduce the cost of “green electricity” for end consumers. The maximum bid is 9 euro cents per 1 kWh. The auction will take place on October 31, and applications will be accepted until October 30, 2024. Why is it important? This auction is the first of many upcoming ones aimed at supporting investors in the renewable energy sector. Thanks to transparent conditions, investors will be able to attract financing, create new jobs, and increase generating capacity. This approach will help to reduce the price of green energy and increase energy security and integration into the European energy system. Supporting renewable energy sources is not only environmentally friendly but also beneficial for economic development and future generations.

Ukrainian businesses have begun to develop distributed generation; this provides for their needs and additional capacities for the power system. Ukrainian company Energo-Plus plans to purchase a closed thermal power plant with a capacity of 60 MW in a neighboring country and transport it to Ukraine. The project will cost approximately €50M. This power plant was built in 2016-2018 but was never put into operation due to high gas prices in the country where it is located. Currently, it is 90% ready, with all the necessary components already in place. It could take 8-12 months to transport the thermal power plant and put it into operation. At the same time, in the Zhytomyr region this year, the number of private enterprises that have installed solar power generation increased from six to 20. One example is the 108 solar panels, with a total capacity of 62 kW, that were installed on the roof of the Stanyshivka Vegetable Plant, allowing the enterprise to save almost ₴300,000 while providing up to 40% of the business' power consumption. The cost of the solar energy system is about ₴1.23M, and it return its investment in three years. https://lnkd.in/dJEebUkF

"Energy storage facilities in the power system of Ukraine. Current state and development prospects" was the topic of an online conference that brought together representatives of government institutions and private companies - leading industry experts, market participants, and energy storage projects stakeholders. The speakers outlined the constraints and steps required to stimulate the development of energy storage facilities in Ukraine, and shared their projects and plans in this area. "Currently, we are working on business models focused on the ancillary services market of the Ukraine’s Integrated Power System (Ukraine’s IPS). We have developed, designed and manufactured our own energy storage solution. Its competitive advantages are its technical design and smart operation algorithms, thanks to which our solution requires significantly less investment to implement 1 MW of Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), and Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) services. We are currently implementing a pilot project of our own investments in the energy storage facilities construction with a certified capacity of 12 MW to provide the FCR services. It will be constructed on the basis of our containers. Shortly, we will test the first megawatt to try out the provision of the FCR service. Also, our company is currently developing 7 projects with a total connected capacity of about 200 MW," said Ievgen Didichenko (Євген Дідіченко), a co-owner and CBDO of KNESS, during his speech. Why is it so important to discuss the development of energy storage facilities today? There is a lack of flexibility in the market. And with the increase of solar and wind generation share in the balance, the deficits of power reserves for primary and secondary frequency regulation will increase. And in this "story", energy storage can fully meet the current market needs, as it has significant advantages over traditional generation. Serhii Kravchuk, Director of Electricity Trading and Supply in KNESS, has been elected as a Renewables Committee Co-Chair in the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. The Committee's goal is to promote transparency and stability in the renewable energy market by creating favorable, equal conditions for running a business and attracting investments from international and national companies. 💬 “Implementation of the European energy legislation practices is carried out taking into account local peculiarities, which requires additional coordination not only at the level of lawmakers and the regulator, but also industry representatives. Based on this, I am planning to work on issues related to the operation of renewable energy producers selling electricity on market conditions and under the market premium mechanism, namely the order of involving RES producers in the dispatching process, the question of accruing a market premium for the amount of electricity output restrictions, aggregation of renewable energy sources with energy storage facilities of active consumers, further practical implementation of guarantees of origin in the electricity market, and establishment of a legislative and regulatory framework for corporate PPAs. It is necessary to highlight the task of further alignment of the Ukrainian and European legislative framework in terms of requirements for energy storage facilities in the process of providing ancillary and balancing services” — mentioned Serhii Kravchuk. For reference: The American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine is an internationally oriented non-governmental business community that brings together leading experts in various industries from over 600 member companies. The organization is a part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the global network of the European Council of American Chambers of Commerce.

Ukraine's government has introduced a global standard for stimulating the construction of new green energy facilities. The Cabinet of Ministers approved a resolution that improves the auction model for selling green electricity. Instead of a fixed tariff, a contract-for-difference mechanism has been introduced that will allow the winners of auctions to distribute renewable energy support quotas. This is a new global standard for stimulating the construction of new renewable energy facilities. According to the resolution, the conditions for participation in auctions are simplified for RES investors. Now, the availability of a plot of land and the necessary technical conditions to connect to the network will be optional when submitting applications. Flexibility has also been added in the ability to conduct auctions with energy storage facilities on designated land plots or structures. The term of validity of the contract concluded by the auction winner with the guaranteed buyer is shortened from an inflated 20 years to an acceptable European length of 12 years. https://lnkd.in/dQE2-YRC
