Is the future of physiotherapy more inclusive? Observing current physiotherapy students' attitudes, beliefs and learning preferences, Dr Megan Ross MACP and Calum Neish from The University of Queensland examined thoughts surrounding care and education regarding LGBTQIA+ community members, in this month's Journal of Physiotherapy. This study highlights the need to improve the current curriculum and incorporate more inclusive education, as many students resort to cis/heteronormative ideas without utilising a critical lens. The ReEducation class on course faciliation programme had taught me the importance of physiotherapy in re education techniques. As I am the model , i learned various techniques on re-education board. Re-education represents a series of therapeutic techniques to restore normal function of nerves and muscles, to include movement, balance, coordination, decreased kinesthetic sense, and impaired proprioception. re-education aims to retrain patients' movements and activities that they already know but cannot properly perform due to illness or injury. The goal is to increase independence through a tailored program of progressive exercises. Exercises may include rolling, sitting, kneeling, standing, and walking activities. Principles include thorough assessment, task-specific treatment, and avoiding discouragement to build confidence and independence over time Overall it has been a wonderful experience that I learned the importance of re-education #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #snscollegeofphysiotherapy

This photo features University of Toronto Physiotherapy student Ashton Yuen during his neurological rehabilitation placement at Propel Physiotherapy in Pickering. Ashton is practicing scapular mobilizations—a hands-on technique we frequently use to prepare clients for reaching activities, such as retrieving items from a shelf or performing tasks of daily living – with the guidance of clinic manager and registered physiotherapist Amanda Raguseo. These mobilizations are crucial for improving range of motion, reducing stiffness, and ensuring proper movement patterns, especially for clients recovering from neurological injuries or managing chronic conditions. At Propel Physiotherapy, we strive to go beyond simply treating symptoms. Instead, we work holistically to improve our clients' overall function and quality of life. Techniques like scapular mobilizations represent a foundational element of this approach, as they help clients regain independence and confidence in their movements. We love nurturing the next generation of physiotherapists! Through collaborations with educational institutions like the University of Toronto, Department of Physical Therapy we get the chance to empower future healthcare providers with the knowledge, skills, and values to deliver evidence-based, empathetic care. #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapystudent #physicaltherapyintern #physicaltherapyinternship #PropelPhysiotherapy

Recently I attended the 61st Physiotherapy National Conference and here’s what i learned in those 3 days- 💡𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Along with earning money and gaining fame we also need to give back to the profession. Physiotherapy as a profession needs growth for which certain changes need to be made which will elevate its value. Now pay back could be in any way for eg providing funds for research, taking initiatives to attend such conferences and then discussing issues that are important or simply just having a YouTube channel where you teach techniques to educate young physios and create awareness. Because these things keep the profession going and motivate beginners like us to take physiotherapy to different heights. 💡𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞: It is not always possible to find likeable people at work but if you keep complaining about it, you’ll never be able to complete the task. Learn to accept people as they are and move forward because the goal is to complete the task, which also might mean you’ll have to do some extra work compared to others but it’ll all work out in the end. It is the same in the case of patients and their relatives, just because a patient is non-cooperative we can’t stop treating him. 💡𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: It is about situational leadership, letting the person with a relevant core competency for a situation take leadership because unless you can work with the team and harness each other’s core competencies, you will always perform below par. 💡𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: Once you have mastered some work skill, you should teach it to teammates working with you, and set a framework in your mind of how will you teach it to someone because it’s not practically possible for you to do all the work by yourself every time. 💡𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: You can be a good clinician along with being an excellent entreprenuer. #physiotherapy #awareness #change #learning #teaching #clinicalpractise #research #teamwork

The freedom of reading…. As a physiotherapy student, I've found that reading plays a crucial role in my academic and professional development. Physiotherapy is a field that continually evolves with new research, techniques, and approaches. Therefore, staying updated with the latest literature is essential to provide the best care for patients. Reading allows me to delve deeper into subjects that interest me, whether it's musculoskeletal rehabilitation, sports therapy, or neurological disorders. It helps me broaden my understanding, challenge my assumptions, and explore different perspectives. Moreover, the freedom of reading extends beyond textbooks and academic journals. It includes diving into personal development books, biographies of influential figures in healthcare, and even fiction that inspires creativity and critical thinking. By embracing the freedom of reading, I empower myself to become a well-rounded and informed physiotherapy practitioner, ready to tackle challenges and contribute positively to the healthcare community. Here's to the power of knowledge and the endless possibilities it opens up! #Physiotherapy #FreedomOfReading #ContinuousLearning #HealthcareEducation #PhysiotherapyStudent #ProfessionalDevelopment #KnowledgeIsPower #LiteratureReview #ContinuousImprovement #LearningJourney #HealthcareKnowledge #Empowerment #ReadingCommunity Picture credit: Getty images

Let’s talk EDUCATION. Why is it important to explain the anatomy and educate clients in our sessions? Many reasons! Here’s a few: 👉🏼 Trust & transparency - our clients chose to come to us, when we explain our treatment choices and reasoning it helps them truly understand the WHY and enchances your relationship 👉🏼 Knowledge is power - empowering your clients with the education needed to understand their condition helps them adjust daily activities and feel more in control, as once again the WHY makes their problem makes sense. 👉🏼 Enhances outcomes (long and short-term) - Educated clients are less likely to reinjure themselves because they understand the ROOT cause. Makes them more aware of their body and what factors are contributing to the pain. Overall, it’s easy to just tell people what to do and leave it at that, but being thorough with clients is what they need. It’s an essential part of effective physiotherapy!
