To nurture key client relationships for revenue maximization. To be the point of contact between senior executives and sales and marketing reps. To be fully knowledgeable about products and services. To forecast sales revenues and improve them. Although not all BDM job descriptions will range as widely as the above list might imply, it’s a challenging role which can involve creativity, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Are you a people’s person? Do you need to be one to perform well in your sales job? I used to be a “technical” sales executive. Always enjoying selling complex technical features of software products to investment banks. But I was always a people’s person too. Adapting to each culture in Europe in all the countries I had to sell to. At one point as much as 13 countries! I used to love understanding their cultures, their business codes, taking clients out to lunch or dinner. That gave me a wealth of knowledge of their lives, aspirations, challenges, preferences. Then I was like a chameleon, mimicking their body language, adapting to their business dress code, their manneurism… It was SO much fun! Was i successful selling? You bet I was! But the best part was that it was not hard work. It was just about getting to know very well my product, my competitors and then most importantly getting to know really well my prospects/clients.
