It's National First-Generation College Student Day! 🎉 Meet Celine Cisneros, a first-gen OT Ram! 👋 💚What does it mean to be a first-generation student? 💛To be a first-generation student means to be the first one in your family to attend college. It means being brave enough to take that first step towards pursuing higher education and making your dreams become a reality. 💚What would you tell other first-generation students? What advice would you share? 💛I would tell other first-generation students that it is okay to ask others for help when you need it. Try to make friends with people who have similar life experiences as you so that you can relate to one another. 💚Tell us about your journey in coming to CSU 💛I came to CSU to attend the occupational therapy doctorate program. I have always wanted to help people and hear their life stories. I chose CSU specifically because I fell in love with the campus and the professors. 💚What opportunities are available to you as a first-generation student at CSU? 💛An opportunity to connect with support resources from the First-Generation Office and career center resources are available to me as a first-generation student at CSU. Keep up the great work, Celine!🐏

Meet Aarna and Yu-Qing! Both 2024 Scotland Summer School students who've crafted AMAZING personal statements and are now diving into their UCAT prep with daily teachings and 1-1 mentoring guidance. Soon they'll be exploring their uni options with our mentor support! ☀️🤩 When you're an aspiring med student, finding a community can be tough. Not many peers at school share the same dream, teachers might not fully get the medical app process, and finding a doctor to carve out time for advice is a challenge without one in the family. On top of that, the app journey can feel like a maze. 😰😕 We get it. That's why we've created a close-knit community to steer you towards your med school dreams. We're not just here to help you get into medical school; we're here to help you build a supportive community full of lifelong friendships. Our doctors, med students, and fellow aspirants share experiences, insights and wisdom whilst also ensuring you have FUN. They are here as a shoulder to cry on, a guide to help with your well-being and a mentor on how to maintain a healthy work-life balance. ☺️🤗 Soon, worries and stress fades away, making the personal statement "easy" (in Aarna's words) and surrounding you with a diverse, caring community (as Yu-Qing put it). 🌎🌎 Join Summer School, were you are supported on your journey to becoming a doctor. https://lnkd.in/eYjV3dg8

With the school year underway, CNIB is reminding parents that vision health can have a profound impact on academic success and development. Set your child up for success by booking an eye exam today! Studies show that 10-14 percent of young children have issues with their vision health, mainly due to refractive errors which can be remedied with a simple pair of glasses. That’s why CNIB recommends all children receive a comprehensive eye examination before starting school. Visit the Canadian Association of Optometrists’ website to find an optometrist near you! https://opto.ca/find-doc Image description: A young boy using his white cane on the sidewalk. In the top left corner of the graphic text reads: "Add an eye exam to your back to school checklist." Next to the image of the boy, on a lined sheet of paper a checklist reads: "backpack, eye exam, lunch box, pencils, notebook, ruler". The checkbox next to the text that reads "eye exam", is checked.

Yesterday was our Year 12 Celebration Day. It's a tradition for students to put up funny (questionable...) memes that reflect their experiences from the year. I came across this one in the morning, and although I think it's supposed to be a criticism, I don't hate it! In fact, it made me feel really proud of the work that the careers team at KIC has done over the last few years. A huge focus has been on highlighting lesser known career options and alternative pathways, and for me, this image suggests that we are making progress. Speech pathology has not traditionally been a highly sought after career pathway for our students. But we have spent time talking about skill shortages and allied health as a broad field and I wonder if maybe, in a small way, this resonated with our students and encouraged them to think about health- related careers beyond nursing, paramedicine and physiotherapy. Sometimes as career practitioners we don't see the impact we are having because it doesn't happen immediately or in obvious ways. It can be easy to feel deflated or like we aren't achieving anything. But every now and then you see something or hear something that helps you realise you are doing important work and all that running around, planning and organising does have a purpose. PS. I am not taking responsibility for the incorrect usage of 'there'. I hung up my English teacher hat four years ago and I'm not looking back 🤣 Kloe Woods Joe Madunic manfred pohlenz #careereducation #pathways #postschooloptions
