Thank you to #BBritProject for this great piece documenting the journey of our Museum, our partnership with Royal Museums Greenwich and the road ahead, with our founder Les Johnson PhD “What it does is it looks at speculations of where the Windrush generations are going to be in years to come because my mantra is ‘doing museums differently,’ and for sure we need to encourage the younger generation to take the storytelling further and to develop the leadership that we need to institutionalize and build the National Windrush Museum.” #Windrush #Blackhistory365 #Reclaimingournarrative #Legacy #Blackhistorymonth https://lnkd.in/efdB3xHu

Bertelsmann Supports Jüdisches Museum Berlin Digitization Project Bertelsmann is contributing €120,000 to support the Jewish Museum Berlin (JMB) in a large-scale digitization project. Over the next three years, from 2024 to 2026, this funding will aid in digitizing publishing and publisher estates that provide valuable insights into the history of Jewish families in and from Germany. These archives, some of which span over 250 years, will be made accessible online to a global audience. This initiative is part of the JMB's broader effort to digitize around 1,800 family collections, preserved through times of persecution and emigration. Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Rabe emphasized the relevance of this project, stating: “As a company with close ties to the publishing industry, we recognize the historical and cultural importance of these archives and are pleased to support their preservation.” By 2026, the JMB aims to make approximately 500,000 items available online, contributing to the museum's goal of becoming a central digital platform for Jewish #history and #culture.

⚠️ Nearly one-third of U.S. solo museum exhibitions are handed to artists represented by just five galleries. This isn’t coincidence—it’s gatekeeping. A small elite decides whose voices are heard and whose are silenced. This concentration of power doesn’t just skew the art market—it distorts our cultural narrative. Museums are writing a homogenous, one-sided art history, leaving the richness of diverse perspectives untold. How much talent, innovation, and cultural truth are we losing to these practices? It’s time for institutions to dismantle the imbalance they uphold. We demand an art history that represents all of us. The art revolution starts now. #ArtMarket #EquityInArt #RepresentationMatters #DiversityInArt #ArtWorldRevolution

A brilliant article
John Harris writes… “Part of the UK’s malaise is our talent for creating the kind of vacuums that are then filled by the worst actors. Our precious museums, by contrast, are repositories of real and powerful stories: if they fall into even more decay and disrepair, we should all fear the consequences.” Let there be no doubt. Museums in Britain’s regional cities are in crisis and at risk of closure (my own included)

What are our practices for healing when working with traumatic collections? How are we supporting ourselves as museum and heritage workers? How are creating spaces for healing with communities whose histories are being told? Join us for an impactful session at the upcoming Museums + Heritage Show Show on May 15th - "Who Cares? Understanding Empathy and Trauma in Museums" with award-winning documentary filmmaker Ashton John. We'll be screening the powerful short film "To Whom Does This Belong?", made by Ashton John with Museum X, UK Activist Museum Award 2024 recipient, together for Black Voices Cornwall CIO and Cornwall Museums Partnership. The film explores Cornish Black History through local archives and museum collections. You can expect a journey of raw reactions to artefacts ranging from newspaper articles to journal entries from a slave ship captain. We’ll discuss the discoveries made, Cornwall’s links to slavery and whether we think these artefacts should be on display at museums. We aim to spark critical discussions around confronting difficult histories, fostering empathy, and ensuring responsible and ethical interpretation of sensitive collections and subject matter in museums. Don't miss this powerful session, which sheds light on the trauma of racism and encourages museums to develop trauma-informed approaches as they decolonise their collections and practices: https://lnkd.in/e-RQiD5C Ashton John is adept at capturing the stories of diverse communities often overlooked. His films inspire social change and awareness. #MuseumsConnectingCommunities #DecolonizeMuseums #TraumaInformedPractices #RawHistories #EthicalCuration #SocialJustice

Museums are often seen as places to explore history and culture, but we sometimes overlook one of their most important roles: collecting. 🏛️ The work of collecting goes far beyond displaying artifacts. It’s about preserving pieces of the past for future generations, ensuring that stories, knowledge, and culture don’t get lost over time. Whether it’s ancient artifacts, contemporary art, or even everyday objects, these collections help us build a bridge between the past, present, and future. Behind every exhibit is a team of dedicated professionals who carefully curate, research, and safeguard these items. Their work is essential to ensuring that what we see in museums isn’t just a snapshot, but a well-researched, contextualized piece of history. When museums collect, they’re not just gathering objects — they’re creating an archive of humanity's story. As we continue to evolve, these collections help us reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going. So next time you visit a museum, remember that the work happening behind the scenes is just as important as the exhibits on display. 🙌 #MuseumWork #CulturalHeritage #Preservation #CuratingTheFuture #eminspost
