🚗 Fleets still propping up new car market growth 🚗 UK new car registrations rose by 1% year-on-year in April, with fleet demand still proving the key to market strength. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), April was the 21st month in a row to see overall growth, thanks to an 18.5% rise in fleet registrations, which accounted for more than six out of ten new cars registered. The SMMT has updated its whole-year sales forecast for the market, with a 0.5% increase. However, its forecast for EV sales has come down by 5.2%. Reaction comes from SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes, Lex Autolease managing director Nick Williams, and KPMG UK head of automotive Richard Peberdy. The Ford Puma was the UK's top-selling car in April, ahead of the Volkswagen Polo and Audi A3. Mercedes and Volvo agency April update The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have now produced their April figures for Mercedes and Volvo compared to BMW and Audi. This month I have added an additional table that shows the split between private, fleet, and business. Mercedes continues to pull back to more traditional levels, and Volvo is also growing. On the surface, this would indicate that maybe some of the challenges of agency that have been discussed are not as severe as anticipated. However, if you look at the split between private and fleet sales, we can see that the private sales are struggling year on year. If manufacturers are having to sell through the fleet channel, this will involve discounting to move the vehicles. This will ultimately hit retailers on two levels: Firstly, they are selling fewer cars. Secondly the discounting will affect residual values in the medium term. The other challenge retailers face is that they're being forced to pre-register vehicles. This will have a drag on their balance sheet - especially if short term sales into fleet come back at a reduced prices. What is difficult know is the percentage of Mercedes and Volvo sales that are are into the fleet market. Mercedes and Volvo Agency June update The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has now produced their June figures for Mercedes and Volvo compared to BMW and Audi. These include the figures showing the split between fleet and private for the brands, and these are in the bottom tables. Note that the Land Rover and Volvo fleet/private data is slightly out because I've not been able to get the data for some of the year to date, but they give a good indication of the split year on year. I love the UK car trade because we all become obsessed by significant issues that have a profound effect on the trade - but then a new one comes along and we forget the last one! This is the case with the agency, as a number of manufacturers have either done a reverse ferret (e.g. Lotus) or kicked it into the long grass (e.g. Stellantis). As a result, we've been left with two main players who have gone pure agency. Agency has now become chip paper, and manufacturers are now obsessing over their ZEV mandates and the effect this will have on the new ICE market for the rest of the year. It will be interesting to see how Mercedes and Volvo use the agency model to tackle the ZEV challenge, especially if they cut back on ICE vehicles, meaning even less commission on overall sales.
