With the EU voting to impose #tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles of 45% and the US imposing 100% tariffs, the question now for the UK is how the government plans to protect the growing UK #EV, #battery and supply chain #industry in its upcoming #industrial #strategy.
By making the right moves, we can ensure that the transition to EVs delivers #economic #growth and creates high-quality UK #jobs in new #green industries. The upcoming industrial strategy must prioritise the growth opportunities that come from the transition to zero emission transport including #EVs, #batteries, #hydrogen, e-fuels for #shipping and #aviation and the associated supply chains.
The good news though is that #sales figures from September 2024 show some heartening trends - that EV #demand is rising, that the ZEV #mandate is working, and that there is a burgeoning industry waiting to be taken advantage of. The UK sold the highest volume of EVs it ever has in a single month, over 53,000, and for two months in a row, electric vehicle share exceeded 20%.
But the transition to EVs is not something that will thrive on its own. The government must develop a comprehensive industrial strategy for battery manufacturing and its supply chain, with clear focus and industrial support covering investment, trade policy and sustainability rules with targets to favour local manufacturing, including cathodes and recycling.
