🏅 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽: “𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” – 𝗠𝘆 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: I had the privilege of leading a workshop about sports nutrition for some of Germany’s top athletes at the 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 – including medalists from this year’s Paralympic and Olympic Games. Engaging with these high-performance athletes was not only inspiring but also incredibly valuable for me as Chief Product Officer at ESN and More Nutrition. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽: even elite athletes still have room for improvement in their nutrition strategies. While they understand the importance of nutrition and supplementation, there’s often a lack of clear, practical guidance and easily actionable solutions. With the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in full swing, I thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about performance fueling at the Olympic athlete level. As a sports dietitian, I know firsthand how important nutrition is for optimal performance, and this includes the top athletes of the world! As the world eagerly enjoys the Paris 2024 Olympics, it's disheartening to see the approach Olympic officials are taking regarding athlete nutrition. The decision to significantly reduce meat-based protein options, replacing them with plant-based alternatives, has sparked a heated debate and for good reason. In theory, the intention is to cut emissions, but according to FAO, global emissions from livestock amount to 12%, while fossil fuels -and there've been a few flights to go to Paris- amount to 75+%- Athletes rely heavily on a balanced diet tailored to their rigorous training and performance needs. While the intention to promote sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint is commendable, the execution leaves much to be desired. Meat-based proteins are a crucial part of many athletes' diets, providing essential nutrients that are challenging to replace with plant-based substitutes. The blanket reduction in meat options fails to consider the diverse dietary needs and preferences of the athletes. Moreover, the lack of proper consultation with nutrition experts and athletes themselves is glaring. In fact, hockey German team has protested and the UK has brought their own chef to cook for their athletes. Offering both alternatives but leaving the final decision to those who have been training for 4 years and whose effort could be ruined by an unbalanced diet a few days before competing. The Olympics should be a celebration of human potential, not a platform for imposing dietary restrictions that could hinder performance. It's crucial for the organizers to revisit this decision and ensure that all athletes have access to the nutrition they need to excel (it looks like eggs and meat are back to all menus now) https://lnkd.in/dzt9fKAH
