#sharing 📣 Read "Tending Repair," the latest report from the historic Pigford Project, a collaborative research effort between the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund and The Institute for Economic and Racial Equity (IERE). The report offers a comprehensive approach to reparative justice in agriculture regarding Black farmers. Notably, the report shares the viewpoint of #Black farmers in their own words. This holistic approach addresses past injustices and the present-day systemic barriers Black farmers face, transforming a narrative of pain and struggle into an opportunity for the next generation of Black #farmers. Solutions are shared to build a more inclusive and equitable agricultural system. https://lnkd.in/eC6ga76K #Blackfarmers #agriculture #Pigford #research #whatsnext #hopeful

In today's Maine Sunday Telegram, I write about Mainer Zoe Weil's latest book, The Solutionary Way. The book offers a framework of how to think about systemic problems, investigate potential solutions and evaluate which solutions to implement. It's a method that has been taught by the Surry-based Institute for Humane Education in Maine schools and in schools around the world. “Solutionary” is a term Weil coined to describe a person who seeks to solve systemic problems in a way that does “the most good and least harm for people, animals, and the environment.” It can also be an adjective used to describe such solutions. A distinguishing feature of solutionary thinking is the inclusion of animals in its ethical equation. https://lnkd.in/gk-RGaUS

Nuggets of wisdom from leaders in animal advocacy - 🙏 “The real heroes are able to put their egos aside and be pragmatic. It’s not easy, but we have to try if we want to save more animals” - Ignacia Uribe, Founder & CEO, Fundación Veg 🙏 “All animal advocacy strategies are inherently incremental—we’re just focused on different increments…these different approaches can and should be complementary, not contradictory. We need both “inside game” tactics working within the system and “outside game” tactics pushing from the margins” - Eva Hamer, Co-founder and Operations Lead, Pax Fauna and Pro-Animal Future 🙏 "In the words of Henry Spira, “Rather than day-dreaming about perfect and absolute solutions, activists need to push for the most rapid progress” - Ilona Rabizo, Co-founder and Director of Social Change, Anima International #animals #advocacy #advocates #animaladvocacy #animaladvocates #animalwelfare
I'm inspired by the success, passion, and savvy of advocates in our movement. I recommend this Anima blog on lessons learned by 10 top advocates. My main takeaways: 1. Adapt campaign tactics constantly. Create feedback loops to know when to adapt. 2. Celebrate all progress, no matter how small. All change is incremental. 3. Professionalize, but be sure to not lose grassroots activist passion. 4. Lead with a clear vision and communication. Specific org structures / rules are less important. 5. Be humble and nourish a "beginner's mind." We've all been wrong before and will be again. I'm grateful to Aaron Ross, Ignacia Uribe R., Andrea Gunn, Wayne Hsiung, Ilona Rabizo, Eva Hamer, Jayasimha Nuggehalli 刘胜利, Mahi Klosterhalfen, Josh Balk, and Lucas Alvarenga for these insights -- and for the work they do every day to spare countless millions of forgotten animals from suffering. https://lnkd.in/g4pMYpxT
