We are proud to announce that our new climate targets for 2030 have been approved by Science Based Targets initiative. These climate targets include reducing emissions throughout the chain. Together with our parent company Nature's Pride we are the first importers of fruit and vegetables to commit to chain-wide reduction goals. This is a significant milestone in our efforts to care for nature and realise a more sustainable chain. In recent years, Berries Pride and Nature's Pride have taken significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This focused primarily on company operations and transport. We have worked on increasing packaging sustainability, implementing the transition to green energy sources, valorising food waste for human and animal consumption and incorporating sustainable transport solutions. By applying chain-wide targets, we will now collaborate with our growers to reduce agricultural emissions, also known as FLAG targets. #bettertogether #careforpeopleandnature

COMPOST… Nature’s Climate Champion! - The theme for the 2024 International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) represents a global collaboration effort. This theme aligns with the UN objective by emphasizing the vital role of compost in combatting climate change. Here are the key roles compost plays: Methane Reduction: Composting organic materials instead of landfilling them significantly decreases methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas twenty-five times more potent than carbon dioxide. The environment today faces a multitude of challenges, influenced by both human activity and natural processes. Here are some key issues: 1. Climate Change: Global temperatures are rising due to greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial activities. This leads to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disrupted ecosystems. 2. Biodiversity Loss: Habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change have led to significant declines in plant and animal species. This loss of biodiversity threatens ecosystems and the services they provide, such as pollination and clean water. 3. Pollution: Air, water, and soil pollution from industrial processes, agricultural runoff, and plastic waste are major concerns. These pollutants can harm wildlife, human health, and the planet’s ecosystems. 4. Deforestation: Forests are being cleared for agriculture, urban development, and logging. This not only contributes to carbon emissions but also destroys habitats for countless species. 5. Ocean Health: Oceans are suffering from overfishing, plastic pollution, and acidification due to increased carbon dioxide levels. These factors threaten marine life and the livelihoods of communities that depend on healthy oceans. 6. Sustainable Resources: The over-extraction of natural resources, including water, minerals, and fossil fuels, is unsustainable. We need to transition to renewable resources to protect the planet’s future. 7. Environmental Justice: Vulnerable communities often bear the brunt of environmental degradation. Addressing these disparities is crucial for creating equitable and sustainable solutions.

World Environment Day isn’t just about one day of the year to show support and help raise awareness. Since 1973, World Environment Day has raised awareness to highlight critical environmental issues, from climate change to the depletion of the ozone layer in a bid to encourage governments, businesses, civil society groups and individuals to take action. In the procurement industry, like many other sectors, factoring in the environmental impact and planning for long-term sustainability should be embedded at every stage in order to take responsible action to reduce our global carbon footprint. Did you know? 🌎 Only 0.5 per cent of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater. Climate change is dangerously affecting that supply. 🌎 The world will need to raise its food production by 60–70 per cent to feed a projected human population of 9 billion by 2050 even as the current agricultural expansion continues to threaten forests and biodiversity. 🌎 Cities account for 75 per cent of global resource and energy use and produce more than half of global waste and at least 60 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. My interests are through Packaging. This is something we all get one way or another and sustainability is very much a part of our future Overall we should all be considering Climate change and watching carbon emissions. From my 60 years in packaging at all levels I have naturally learnt and taught a lot For our future all raw elements should be considered and rash changes avoided. There are many peripheral materials being given trial runs and we should be following the results. Most of all we urgently await the Government directions and progress on ‘simpler waste collections. It is sadly interesting, that despite lots of talking and verbal focus on environmental protection, and despite already knowing, that REDUCE would be the solution, because of the current profit-centric business model, we are ending every year with an increasing GHG emission, deforestation, pollution and overall increasing consumption. It seems to me, that the annual COP gatherings are not helping to change the tide, I have not seen any significant achievement despite about 100.000 people feeling the necessity to travel and participate every year, causing lots of traveling-related emissions. I know, that there is no easy solution, because the REDUCE approach is neither popular, nor profitable, so it is very unlikely, that the companies and/or 8 billion people would do it voluntarily, and take their fair share, I believe, that all small steps matter, so it is still not holding me back to do my part, in the past 2 years I reduced my fossil fuel consumption by > 80 %, using my feet and public transportation, and my heating gas consumption by > 60 %, plastic bottles by 99 %, and either producing our own food or purchase it from small local farmers, planted > 300 trees and recreated a small, bird and insect friendly forest.
