Heartfelt thanks to Bruce Howard, Chairman of the Ecosystems Knowledge Network on a successful Nature Finance UK conference. Special thanks to Tom Arthur Sir Ian Cheshire, Stuart Wainwright OBE Samuel Sinclair George Sethia Andy Grundy MICFor Stanley Smith Helen Edmundson Kerry ten Kate Susan Twining and to the many other panelists and organisers. Key themes discussed included the importance of genuine nature impacts, alongside carbon sequestration, as part of robust Natural Capital Solutions. The opportunities for new technology as it relates to baseline assessment and uplift monitoring were emphasized. We could not agree more. I founded Highland Carbon in 2017, as a zoologist with extensive experience in international conservation, and with a passion to achieve genuine biodiversity impacts. From the beginning, we have offered an antidote to small, low quality carbon projects. We had a bold idea to focus on authentic, large-scale projects that benefit rare and endangered species and enhance critically important habitats in spectacular locations. For the past two years, we have also begun raising funds for rewilding activities that complement carbon projects: dry meadow restoration, river re-wiggling, wetland restoration, wet meadow restoration and much more. Another key theme during the Conference was collaboration to achieve the UK's targets for both nature restoration and climate change mitigation. Let’s get straight to it: 💰 5x MORE FOR BIODIVERSITY A new report from NatureFinance brought big numbers: - Biodiversity gets $166 billion a year from private investors. - By 2030, this needs to hit $830 billion—5 times more! 🏢 SHIFTING FROM PUBLIC TO PRIVATE FUNDING The study "The State of Finance for Nature" revealed vital data: - Right now, 82% of funding comes from public sources. - But private funding needs to 7x, growing from 18% to 33% by 2050. Governments also need to step up, reaching $359 billion a year by 2025 and $439 billion by 2030 for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). 💡 IT'S ABOUT QUALITY AND QUANTITY Saying "companies need to pay more" is easy, but for us working in conservation and restoration, it’s about raising the bar on project quality. High-quality projects need to scale 40x by 2030 to hit the 20 million-ton carbon capture target. Investors are looking for strong, low-risk projects. Verra is known for bringing new standards in its strive to improve the quality and integrity of carbon credits. In that series, it has now introduced a new label to its assessment of key attributes of high-quality and high-integrity nature-based carbon credits, called ABACUS. This label also helps the projects adopt recent and upcoming scientific and technological developments. This additional label from VERRA ensures that investments in this segment will support truly additional, biodiverse, and lasting restoration. The ABACUS label will require projects to excel in key areas such as dynamic additionality, transparency, permanence, and the avoidance of displacement of food production. The ABACUS label also aims to advance several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life on Land (SDG 15). The event was filled with insightful discussions, and I’d like to extend my appreciation to the incredible speakers and panel members for their contributions to such a critical topic. The TNFD framework is a fantastic tool, and I strongly encourage businesses and stakeholders to explore it, as biodiversity is becoming an increasingly significant issue. More and more companies, clients, and governments are focusing on nature-related risks and opportunities, and it’s clear that transparency in these areas will be key to driving change. By working with Indigenous leaders and communities, this platform will advance a host of Indigenous-led projects that centre nature-based solutions and Indigenous rights and responsibility. It will do so by providing Indigenous governments with support across the project lifecycle - from ideation to implementation.
