On 20 November 2024, we received the sad news that Lord Prescott passed away. He was one of only three people to become an honorary member of Nautilus International. Many people may not know that he played a key role in helping the families of seafarers lost during the sinking of the MV Derbyshire to find out what happened to their relatives. Thanks to his Derbyshire inquiry, our ships and seafarers are safer today. Read about his part in the DFA's campaign for answers below:

Exciting news: we are now playing an even more active role in preserving the UK’s maritime heritage. We have joined forces with National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) in a new scheme that will safeguard the future of the 1,500 vessels on its National Register. Columbia Metals will offer a discount to owners and custodians of registered vessels for materials required in support of their maintenance and conservation. In a vessel owner survey carried out last year, NHS-UK determined that there was pressing need for support around maintenance costs, as well as mooring and operational fees, in order to preserve historic examples of the UK’s maritime heritage. The organisation has now partnered with several companies and institutions involved in the maritime sector to address the financial concerns that were raised. Columbia Metals has been building healthy relationships with marine engineers and shipbuilders for over 60 years and has developed a dedicated stock of naval engineering alloys. We are delighted to support this honourable endeavour in pursuit of our continued commitment to the sector. NHS-UK is a government-funded organisation dedicated to the maintenance and conservation of historic vessels. Its National Register lists 1,500 craft that are at least 50 years old, based in UK waters and more than 33ft in length overall. The organisation is sponsored by the Headley Trust, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The vessels listed on the National Register include barges, trawlers, lifeboats, tugs, ferries, fishing boats, shrimpers, steamers and schooners, amongst many others. Further details of the scheme are available here: https://lnkd.in/gBAiQzT6. #maritime #heritage #nationalhistoricships #copperalloys The image shows the fishing vessel Happy Return, built in 1904 and listed on the National Register.

Missed last Thursday's San Francisco Harbor Safety Committee meeting? Here's what you missed: ✅ A long-awaited YES vote to approve the addition of two routes to the Ferry Traffic Routing Protocol. 🎙️ A live interview with IALA Deputy Secretary General Omar Eriksson, where he discussed the new electronic nautical chart and maritime data exchange standards (IALA S100 and S200). He also highlighted the benefits of the IALA Ports and Waterways Safety Assessment (PAWSA) program. Harbor Safety Committee meetings are open to the public, and there's no better way to stay informed about what's happening in the best maritime region in the United States than by attending these meetings. They usually take place on the second Thursday of each month, but in September 2024, we held it one week early. Stay updated and make sure you don't miss out next time—visit the Marine Exchange website for details. www.sfmx.org #MaritimeSafety #HarborSafety #IALA #FerryRouting #PublicMeetings #SanFranciscoBay #sfmx #hsc #maritime
