The academic year 2023/2024 has been remarkable, with the School growing again for the sixth year in a row, and with reputation and recognition reaching unprecedented levels. The last quarter has been again most vibrant, as can be seen in the last issue of our quarterly Newsletter. The usual sections (Retrospective; Prospective; Clubs; and Alumni) show the array of activities performed, that contribute to giving our students the best environment to learn and grow, and to facilitating our faculty to keep on advancing on research and teaching methodology. KU Leuven makes another solid leap forward in the 2024 #ShanghaiRanking Today, the 2024 Shanghai Ranking (ARWU or Academic Ranking of World Universities) was released. KU Leuven has made a significant leap in this ranking, moving up from 95th (2022) to 86th (2023) to 78th place (2024) (+17). This makes our university, by far, the highest-ranked Belgian university in all recognized rankings (see also position 45 in the 2024 THE World University Rankings and position 63 in the 2025 QS World University Rankings). There is always something to be said about rankings. Their value should be taken with a grain of salt. But when all rankings point in the same direction and are supported by objective indicators – I refer, among others, to KU Leuven's leading position in the European Horizon Europe research program – they certainly say something about what researchers, lecturers, students, alumni, and donors collectively achieve by excelling in what they do best. Rankings also serve as an important signal. A university's position in the rankings always says something about its ambition or lack thereof, and about the quality of policy. More importantly, rankings either attract or repel talent. In this sense, high positions are of great importance to the business community or for the talent pipeline of strategic research centers like imec, VIB, VITO, or Flanders Make. They co-determine who you talk to and who talks to you, they thus help determine a region's access to the knowledge of other top international universities. A ranking is a useful barometer for the future-oriented nature of education and science policy and often reflects the extent to which a region invests in R&D. I invite the Flemish politicians to look at the rise of leading German and French universities in the #ShanghaiRanking, which are rapidly developing into powerhouses for science and innovation, and serve as strong levers for industrial policy. These are not coincidentally countries where a vision of excellence has been developed, the importance of sufficient concentration and critical mass is recognized, and further internationalization is a high priority. We must compare ourselves internationally to stay in touch with what is happening in a globalized scientific landscape and to learn how government and university administrations can work together more effectively to build powerful world-class knowledge institutions. In trust and away from excessive control. Various global rankings assess universities based on a combination of performance indicators. While these rankings are not without their critics, they can offer valuable insights, especially when observing trends over time. Below, I present the QS World University Ranking for Belgian universities. While KU Leuven has remained consistently strong, UCLouvain has shown a clear decline, widening the gap between the two institutions. What could be causing UCLouvain's downward trend? Is it due to a lack of funding, excessive regulations, or other factors?

Practices in assessing the value and impact of an individual academic’s work have long been biased towards research output, such as citation scores. In turn, the planning and trajectory of #academic careers have progressively tilted towards certain types of research achievements, to the detriment of equally deserving tasks, such as teaching or societal outreach. Recent years have brought progress towards more balanced and transparent assessment, for example through the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) and increased attention towards better reward and recognition of teaching at institutional and national levels. This #EUA2024AnnualConf panel discussion will take stock of such developments and reflect on what further steps are needed to ensure that academic career paths authentically reflect individual academics’ full range of talents, achievements, and contributions. the top ten In the current “#THE #World #University #Rankings 2025” (WUR), the University of #Bayreuth is ranked 236th in the “Research Environment” category, placing it among the top 11 percent of universities listed worldwide. Overall, it has risen for the second time in a row: In the overall ranking, it is now in the 301 to 350 range out of almost 2,100 internationally rated universities. Very glad to share this post with you, dear connections. For those who do not know: The University of Antwerp in its current form has only been around since 2003, so we are considered a young university and the dynamism and flexibility of that label can be felt everywhere! It was in 2023 that three higher education institutions, which had existed for decades and in one case since 1852, merged to form the University of Antwerp. That means that, in addition to the young character described above we can also look back at a century-long history and tradition. Both these attributes contribute to form the modern, open, student-oriented and research-based university, which we know today and which is nicely reflected in the rankings below.
