We know that we have not only the responsibility, but the great potential of being agents of change and generate a positive impact amongst ourselves, and the social and natural environment that surrounds -and in many ways makes- us. We are convinced that economic growth must go hand in hand with personal growth and respect for the environment, which is why in this year 2024, we´ve planned with the desire to align our actions to the natural environment's needs. With this being said, today we officially introduce our sustainable action plan: "Eco-House For Communities". 🌱 This is a special co-creation with Mariaeladia De Moya Cuello, our Community Impact Manager, who will be guiding us and our collaborators in this journey. As we step into another year of purposeful action, we pause to reflect on the monumental strides we've made together. Our latest Impact Report is more than just statistics—it's a testament to the power of collective dedication to sustainability and community support. 🌍 4,257 Tonnes of Carbon Avoided: Each action we take is a step towards a cleaner, greener planet. We've made a significant dent in potential carbon emissions thanks to our united efforts. ♻️ 90% Diversion from Landfill: We've turned the tide against waste, ensuring the vast majority of items are repurposed and given a second life, away from landfill oblivion. 🛠️ Strengthening Communities: With Six Resource Recovery Hubs in Kaikohe, Albany, Manukau, Waitara, Wellington and Christchurch, we're not just recovering resources; we're rebuilding lives and nurturing communities. 📍 Nationwide Reach: Our reach has grown, touching 28 towns and cities, proving that sustainable practices have no borders. 👩🔧 Employment and Education: With 29 people employed and 14 education and training opportunities provided weekly, we're investing in human potential. 🔄 Supporting Local and Global Communities: Our impact resonates through 481 communities and crosses oceans to 9 countries, showcasing our global commitment to change. And at the core? Our 89 monthly volunteers. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗯. It needs a safe environment where it can thrive. A place small yet big enough to generate meaningful insights. A place culturally diverse enough to allow testing in different cultural environments. A place where the gap between the haves and the have nots is significant enough to understand what will and won’t work. A place that has pioneered breakthroughs before. The world needs a place where - Solutions to 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 can be tested and scaled globally. - Paths to 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 can be explored and refined. - Strategies for 𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 can be developed and replicated. - Models to 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗯 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 can be piloted and expanded. 𝗔 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 In 1834, the first ship to carry indentured labourers arrived in Mauritius from India and thus begun the post slavery model, a world first. This led to millions of Indians transported to colonies around the world. 𝗠𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺, a significant, albeit flawed, experiment in economic restructuring. It became a testing ground for a global shift, leaving a legacy that continues to influence labor markets in much of the developing world today. 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? It’s got everything required to be the perfect lab - it is small yet big enough, it is culturally diverse, is economically, significantly unequal and it has all the problems of the world. Mauritius’s could test out 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 experimenting with sun, waves and wind. It could pioneer circular economy practices, regenerative agriculture and develop marine conservation projects. It could, using its own experience of peaceful coexistence among diverse communities, 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 by becoming a neutral hub for global peace building initiatives. It could pilot 𝗽𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 initiatives such as a basic income program, state driven micro business development and micro finance systems. It could develop sustainable tourism practices, zero waste programs, encourage localised production to reduce dependence on imports and test new systems that 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Just as it birthed a new labor system in the 19th century, it could now 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. This initiative wouldn’t just benefit the world. It would empower Mauritius to lead, attract global investment, foster innovation, and secure a brighter future both for its and the world’s citizens.
