Mark Cancian's latest piece in Breaking Defense highlights the growing issue of legacy precision weapon systems being rendered "useless" on the battlefield in the face of growing new countermeasures. Precision weapon systems shouldn't fade away, but with war moving at the speed of technology, they must adapt to new conditions. At a minimum, precision weapons have to be capable of rapid software updates to defeat new countermeasures and threats as they emerge, and manage targeting and guidance on the edge to operate in denied environments. Proprietary software is edging out proprietary hardware.
