One of the things that I love about my work is how it shows me a full spectrum of human experiences! My consultation room that day was buzzing with historic stories by Ajji, a 92-year old stroke survivor. Ajji’s story-telling captured everyone’s attention. She had witnessed the pre-independence era, and was an eyewitness to the partition as well. We’ve all read about these instances in our history books, but history only describes experiences….what one must have felt can only be understood through conversations. What inspired me the most is how she still loved & lived every bit of her life, even after experiencing some of the most traumatic chapters of history. She made me realize that we grow old with experiences, and age is actually just a social construct. She was still young, travelling to new places, experiencing life with her great grand sons. How, you ask? She was loyal to her prescriptions & daily routine. It was as simple as that. She built her health every single day. The mountain didn’t seem so big when it was climbed one step at a time. Your key take-aways from Ajji should be: - Treat your body the way you would want to be treated - with care & attention. - Hydrate it with water. - Take your meals right on time (oh, meals that don’t include processed foods) - Never forget to take your medicines. - Regularly take follow-ups with your doctor. No seriously, don’t hesitate to visit and ask your doctor any questions you have.
