This post made me reflect as a #videoeditor
I recently saw a post offering $10-15/hr for freelance editing and another shortly after for $25/hr.
No, not all posts, but this isn't acceptable in 2024. We are worth more, and as a collective we need to show the industry how we want to be treated because we’ve been asking politely a for long time.
Know your worth. By offering us low wages, we don’t have to take the position. How did we get to the salary/freelance numbers we have now? What is the solve?
My second thought: Know your value AND your values.
Where do you think creative/creative process disrespect comes from? Likely greed or desperation (shh, I said the quiet part out loud). It takes a massive, valuable team to make something like the MCU decade long success happen. You need a crew of both creative and analytical minds to complete a project of that scale.
Across various teams it was discussed how often the creative process isn't respected. Often art, edits and animations being viewed as some kind of "magic button" that the department can just push and be done. Fast right? See how the phrase even creates the misconception? And enter the employee's shrunken self worth. Obviously cultures vary and you can’t win them all, but we can try to affect change.
The question now is how do we as creatives change this kneejerk Toxic Creativity 😝 mindset? I invite you to start being proactive with me in this thinking process. Bring up whatever is making you feel undervalued. Keep being your own advocates. It is exhausting, you're right. Do it anyway, your value is worth it. Set certain boundaries if you need to.
"Uninterrupted creative thinking Tuesdays from 1:30-3pm."
If you're not a creative and identify with some of these points, these discussions need to be in the light of day outside of our echo chamber.
As analytical coworkers, you can support us by never assuming answers and asking questions. And if you need support, we'll be glad to assist. Everyone likes being setup for success and helping each other can never be undervalued.
AND
“You cannot create creative faster than the creative process allows.”—full stop.
Thad did I hear this from you? Regardless, credit where due.
This has remained consistent to various degrees over the years, we need to learn how to respect each other's differences, appreciate each other's hard work and support each other's goals (inside and outside of the workplace). We should always try to take the time to give props and show love to co-workers who are doing great work, even over long hours. You never know when the burnout will hit, and it's so important to show people that you value their contributions and time.
Sources say Marvel is plunking down $80 million for Anthony and Joe Russo to direct “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “significantly more” for Downey to tackle uber-villain Doctor Doom in the two tentpoles. The Russos’ deal doesn’t include back-end compensation, but it does contain performance escalators that kick in at the $750 million and $1 billion thresholds.
For Downey, who helped catapult Marvel into a money-printing machine thanks to his turn as Tony Stark in the first “Iron Man” film in 2008, his deal also is filled with perks that include private jet travel, dedicated security and a whole “trailer encampment” for the newly minted Oscar winner.
