Construction starts on new Community Diagnostic Centre

IOA faculty Sarah Dys, PhD, MPA and Dr. Ozcan Tunalilar recently published a brief study entitled "Assisted Living, Residential Care, and Memory Care Staffing Level Dynamics: Oregon, 2017-2023." This study examined the change in #staffinglevels in #assistedliving and #residentialcare settings from 2017 to 2023 in #Oregon, allowing for comparison before, during, and post-COVID-19 pandemic. The study found a wide range of staffing levels, pointing to significant differences in operational structures, resource allocations, and resident characteristics across different communities, with implications for the quality of care provided to residents. Understanding the significant changes to staffing patterns (levels and mix) after the #COVID19 pandemic is crucial for developing policies to improve adaptability and resilience of AL/RC settings. I fear this is a classic case of confirmation bias, defending a decision made without proper consideration of the options. It is noteworthy from CEO Alice Webster’s defence of the decision (https://lnkd.in/ej9yQRb2) that consideration of alternative sites only took place after significant investment had been made in the Endoscopy unit a year before. Is this a question of the tail wagging the dog? Why is it so impossible to build a new hospital on a greenfield site in six years? Great article by Jim Johnson on Dr. Rosemary McDonnell, DPS, MPS, whose "Emergence Program Change Initiative called for the creation of a Vulnerable Populations Subcommittee within her hospital’s Emergency Management Committee, whose mission would be to address any #healthcare disparities and enhance emergency planning for populations with disabilities or other access and functional needs; the hospital would incorporate them into emergency drills and exercises, as well as existing emergency training, and create a new position and job action sheet devoted to inclusive crisis communications." #chds

Pleased to read this project progressing along nicely. We provided Kier Group and Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust with specialist ecological services on this much needed outpatient facility for the south-west. During Stage 1, we identified a roosting common pipistrelle in one of the buildings outlined for demolition. On completion of the required Stage 2 survey, the roost was classified as low conservation importance. Incorporating relatively straightforward bat mitigation to maintain favourable conservation status, along with enhancements for swift, was outlined in the supporting EcIA which was submitted, and conditionally approved, at planning determination. Based on the roost status and ease of mitigation, the demolition works qualified for Natural England’s (NE) bat class mitigation (BCML) (previously low impact) licence. Following planning approval, our NE registered BCML principal ecologist Johanna registered the site with the licence granted within days. Supervised soft demolition under the BCML followed ahead of schedule, bat mitigation installed on adjacent buildings with the project continuing uninterrupted! Good project planning is essential, and specialist ecological advice should always be considered early in any project proposals. In this instance Kier approached us right from project inception, and retained our services through to NE licence application and implementation. This was a very straightforward project for us, with our expertise and registered ecologist making the project run even smoother. Royal College of Emergency Medicine supported Trainee Emergency Research Network (TERN) next study is going to recruit everyone that is being cared for in an escalation area ie corridor in ED and try and understand who these patients are and the outcomes. Hypothesis being they are likely to be older, vulnerable and from high areas of deprivation with worse care. They want to understand what the impact of being cared for in an escalation area is and what proportion are being treated in those areas. They will also create a real time dashboard of the situation. Thrilled for the chance to talk to my colleagues at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College about unconscious bias and the Bias Time Out Tool. Understanding unconscious bias is a first step in combating it. And programs like these where people get tools and learn how to manage bias, are critical to improving care outcomes. Bias in health care can manifest in various forms, including racial, gender, socioeconomic and cultural biases. These biases can affect clinical decision-making, treatment plans and patient interactions. Unconscious biases may lead to disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of certain medical conditions, resulting in adverse outcomes for marginalized or underrepresented groups. Eliminating bias in healthcare is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic necessity for achieving optimal patient outcomes and ensuring the trust and confidence of diverse patient populations.
