🚨 Is the Wind Energy Sector Falling Behind on Innovation?🚨 We are sitting on a goldmine of wind speed, which is cubic proportional to power generation. But whenever we encounter higher wind speeds, we get nervous, disregarding physics, and begin pitching the blades, limiting our output to rated power. Why do we do this? Is it due to generator limitations, excessive loads, or overspeeding? If these issues can be defined by engineering, surely engineering and physics can provide solutions too. Why aren’t we thinking bigger? Why not have 2, 3, or even 4 generators? Why not increase the clearance between the tower and blade, or make towers thicker? A 3 MW turbine could easily scale up to 6 or 7 MW! Could smaller blades allow us to capture more energy from higher wind speeds, even beyond their diameter? I’m baffled that these ideas aren’t widely discussed. If we dedicated just one day with the right minds in a room, I believe we could find the answers and innovate. Yet, innovation seems stifled in large R&D departments—this is why startups often lead the charge with breakthrough ideas.
